I think there is more to say about the way that refugees are welcomed, prepared and economically integrated and a comparison to make with successful integration policies in other countries. But above all, welcoming refugees is a question of humanity, and the lack of it is shameful.

Neither did it mention the context of an ageing population in the UK, the associated economic impact on working capacity and the shortages in care and future cost of a care service. We need migration.

BBCR4's More Or Less last week featured a piece on refugees that confused the cost to the Exchequer with the cost/benefit to the economy as a whole, and also failed to consider the long run impact, as opposed to short term issues and costs. #refugees #migration #economics

But what if, as the only major economy still doing so, he stopped the UK paying banks so much (un-tiered) interest on reserves? And made investments during a period of weak demand and poor productivity through deficit financing? And used smart taxation to control inflation?

I'm always amazed at the BBC's persistence with the household income metaphor for government borrowing and spending. Yes it's simple to set out but... simplistic. Bank reserves? Interest paid to banks on bank reserves? That's something to cut from the 'housekeeping'! www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Sadly, I think the greater *political* concern is the toxicity of a significant number of nationalists who remain ignorant of, and forever disengaged from, the European project. No re-integration without education... Or devolution?
