Nah. The only philosophy I had was an elective. The only thing you read are cases. Law school is trade school that thinks it's academia.

Law school's not that hard. I spent way more time on Japanese just in the first three years I was studying the language, which is how law school is.

For the states that had major statewide races, how much would Congressional districts flip under last night's voting patterns?

This is slightly interesting to see but much less exciting than when I just happened to see the Prime Minister of the UK announce her resignation live, from a few dozen meters away.

There was reporting earlier that DPFP may support the LDP on a PM vote so more likely that, but at this point who knows.

Mutantfrog @mutantfrog.bsky.social · 14/10/2025
Sure looks like some big news is about to break at LDP headquarters. Loads of cops and reporters around, but no other civilians. One reporter with a TV camera told me they're here on a tip but couldn't tell me what about, other than that they're all still waiting for it. Any predictions?

You also can only ever, as a civilian, own a single action hunting rifle. There are no legal privately owned pistols (other than perhaps some basically non-functional antiques).

I didn't go in much but "in front of the Sanjo Starbucks" was a VERY common reference as a meeting point.

At least it was designed to blend in aesthetically reasonably well. And the kawadoko is so nice, if you can get onto it. I haven't even visited the general area the last couple of times I've been to Kyoto.

The Starbucks was definitely there as of 2002, but it may have been pretty new then. Roughly opposite the Lawson, which is on the south side of the street.

On X, Masaki Nobushiro posts a recurring (and useful) drawing about how people wrongly think a 1m tsunami is a cresting wave when it's actually a wall of water filled with dangerous and deadly debris that's strong enough to sweep up a car. #tsunami
X post by @nobushiromasaki.

A rule of thumb for tsunamis is that in open ocean, they move at similar speeds to commercial airliners. If you're ever curious how long it would take for a tsunami to get from one place to another, look up the duration of a similar-length flight.

The magnitude has been further refined to M8.8. It may seem like 8.7 and 8.8 are close, but the difference actually means about 40% more energy released. Logarithmic scales will do that! Want to know the difference between any two magnitudes? Try this calculator: earthquake.usgs.gov/education/ca...

The mass starvation & killing of Palestinians in Gaza at the hands of the Israeli gov’t is a chillul hashem, a desecration of God. Jewish leaders who criticized Zohran Mamdani for three words he doesn’t use should raise their voices loudly here as well. forward.com/opinion/7575...

Gaza is starving. Where are the American Jewish leaders?
A fear of being labelled antisemitic still deters American Jews and Jewish institutions from taking a position that is morally correct.

Do you think there's any impact relating to a general feeling of wanting to disassociate religion and politics following the Unification Church scandal/backlash?

Mutantfrog @mutantfrog.bsky.social · 21/07/2025
Right, but I mean if you assume that the election yesterday would roughly map to the support levels of a hypothetical general election (not saying it would, but as a thought exercise) then I still don't think you get a governing coalition.
110
Mutantfrog @mutantfrog.bsky.social · 21/07/2025
Absolutely not. If you add together all the parties that are arguably to the left of the LDP/Koumeito, you don't even hit 100. If you extrapolate the trend of these shifts to a hypothetical general election it's not quite impossible but very very very unlikely. www.nhk.or.jp/senkyo/datab...

Mishima Yukio in 1948, a year before he published his seminal semi-autobiographical novel, Confessions of a Mask. I don’t think I’ve ever seen him looking so early-Showa-esque. He looks ready to star in the Asakusa vaudevilles. Far cry from the purposefully macho look he’d cultivate until his death.
Mishima Yukio in tight fitting suite and striped tie, with gelled, high hair that tapers to the back. He’s smiling while sitting at a table and playing with a cat.

Nice to see someone writing about legal history who has some understanding of history, unlike the amateur historians that populate the American judiciary and much of American legal academia.

It's particularly bad in law, IMO. The very specific task known as "legal research" is fundamentally about finding cases that cite other cases or use specific keywords. There's very little conceptual analysis and very little discussion of the concept of historical context. Lawyers are bad at history

Incidentally, the documentary about the collapse of the original production of The Man Who Killed Don Quixote is great and absolutely worth watching. Moreso than the film that was eventually made, sadly.

TBH I barely remember Fisher King and may want to revisit it, and Fear and Loathing I don't love but do enjoy pretty well. Perhaps my least favorite of his films that I still enjoy. I enjoyed the book enough to finish it but not to read more of Hunter S Thompson.

I fucking love Munchausen, which I did first see as a pretty young kid. Tideland I should rewatch. I suppose I could agree that 12 Monkeys isn't as clever as it thinks it is, but IMO it's still really good! All three leads just kill it.

You say Kyoto, ramen, fried chicken and my first thought is Takayasu (中華そば髙安) which is near Ichijoji, not Nanzenji. It's in a strip that's famous for having a heavy concentration of good ramen shops, with several sometimes developing queues outside.

I agree that this is their goal, but it's unquestionable that having both Cuomo and Adams in the race makes this dramatically easier for Mamdami. He might have a mild struggle against either one of them, but with them splitting the asshole vote three ways he has basically no serious competition.

If it’s arbitrary and capricious then it is merely state action, but not law. Law is the subset of state action that follows rules.
