Point of order, I don't think Schmitt confused "Hawks" with "Hawkeyes" -- I think he just saw basketball mentioned, looked up only NBA games for that date, and saw the Hawks game was the only one. Still a grandstanding dipshit though.

The writer of the first song in history was probably unpopular, as it would get stuck in people's heads and there was no other song to replace it.

The moment Richard Dawkins jumped the shark. He was a fantastic science writer who decided to become a b-grade public philosopher. I say that as a confirmed atheist too. www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2026/10...

That was my previous dog. She did not approve of our regular kitchen dance-offs. We used to tell her "no barking on the dance floor" :)

Wife and I used to get mock-jealous when people posted them online: "Ooh, look at Mr Big Shot...". Then we saw one on a visit to the amazing Merritt Island nature preserve (at the ranger station feeder). Now we are mock-blasé: "Seen it..." :)

The camera operators on The Office were suspiciously good at always getting the key shot. I have a working theory that the whole thing was faked.

I'm glad we're not in the days of songs by old men lusting after underage little girls anymore. There were so many of them. I just came across "Art Lover" by The Kinks, and just *ick*.

Wow, we waited seven years for the Up series supposed final episode (70 Up), and it was all recap with a few scraps of new content thrown in, and minimal clarity on what's now happening for these people. Most of the players seemed to get just a few seconds. What a big disappointment.

There's loads of ways to use AI that are stupid and wasteful, but solving N-S isn't one of them. This is important stuff. To quote top math guy Terrance Tao: "(T)he actual solving of these problems is only a proxy goal for the primary goal of developing mathematical understanding and insight".

After posting this, I thought wow, I'm going to regret posting such nonsense. Now 3 weeks later and OpenAI is claiming to have the Navier-Stokes problem solved, with a Lean proof and all. Now I'm wondering how quickly all the Millennial problems will fall.

#birdoftheday #heronsandegrets with a messed up story. Mom had died an hour before, in the room where I was standing when this green heron appeared. (Dad had died only a month prior.) An hour later, I got a call from my wife saying please come, MY mother is dying. She did, 3 days later.

#birdoftheday #heronsandegrets And you thought egrets were stealth hunters. Reddish egrets are like "omg fish" and run their fool heads off. It's a riot. 10/10 must see if you get the chance.

I've seen a few bee-eaters, in Singapore and Australia, and they are among my favourites. Any day you see one is a good day, so it would be amazing to live in a place where they come through en masse.

I don't even mean to diss Metallica specifically (though I've never gotten them). Just the incongruity between high technical accomplishment and development of taste. But yeah, there's the whole question of novelty vs what people want to hear. How much new stuff do we really need?

I honestly think so much of it flows out of people's unwillingness to change their views on things they learned as a child, or to have their children be taught something different.

The day I fully accepted that there are smarter people than me was the day someone posted a version of that Rick Astley song, that they claimed sped up every time he says "never". So I watched it, but then IT NEVER DID. My hat is still off to them.

Use "floundering" when you want to mean "struggling clumsily". Use "foundering" only when you want to correct someone for using "floundering".

It was sleeting the last time my wife and I went to France, so we looked up the word for it: "neige fondue", which translates to "snow fondue".

The OTHER thing I love about this clip is seeing her (momentarily) forget where she is in the song. She slows down, remembers, and proceeds. Like Macca said, there's no reason to be nervous while performing, because mistakes just humanise you. Easier said than done though I guess.

In mathematics, I am but a dilettante, but I just get the feeling that the Riemann Hypothesis is going to fall soon. AI lately seems to be mostly resolving negatives, and as RH is likely positive, it's not as easy. But you know some formidable firepower is being thrown at it, and by competing teams.

The same bird was going to be my #UnusualPlaces post, as my brother reported the first purple swamp hen in the USA (Florida), and used to have people calling him up to come try to see one in the lake behind his house. Fortunately or not, they are now well established...
