I need there to exist some sort of website for “what is happening in [city] today” not in the sense of what is a thing I could go do myself but in a “why the fuck is the traffic awful everywhere and three of my buses are diverted” way

The remaining photographs starting here pretty much all reference the federal occupation of Minnesota, December 2025-February 2026.

"Minneapolis Martyrs" by Athena Hollins
This is a single piece labeled "Minneapolis Martyrs" with three portraits of people with haloes and wearing "saintly" robes. On the left is George Floyd (murdered by police May 25, 2020) with a raised fist. In the middle is Renee Good (murdered by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer January 7, 2026) with an open hand raised in a wave. On the right is Alex Pretti (murdered by Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) officers January 24, 2026), wearing glasses, with two fingers raised in a "peace" gesture.

This piece uses about 17 different crops including hydrangea petals for the blue background of each portrait.

This piece was awarded a blue ribbon for first place in its category.

"Last Words" by Jill Carey
This is one of the first pieces visitors to the State Fair crop art exhibit saw. The photo is taken straight on from the front.

This piece is almost entirely black (wild rice and black lentil). It has a tall rectangular background, out of which come two three-dimensional relief sculptures, each of a head. The upper head has the face of Renee Good, and the lower head has the face (with glasses) of Alex Pretti. Below each face is a printed black label with the only non-black elements of the piece - their last words and their names in white. Renee Good's label says "I'm not mad at you." She said this to the ICE officer who asked her to leave; seconds after she said this, he shot her multiple times, killing her. Alex Pretti's label says "Are you okay?" He said this to another observer who had just been shoved by one of the federal officers at the scene. He stood between the other observer and the officer, and was then pushed to the ground and shot multiple times, killing him.

It was awarded a blue ribbon for first place in its category.

The piece on the top left of this photo is divided. On the left, on a brown background, the word DETAINEE is written vertically in yellow, with the acrostic-style words "Don't Ever Traumatize An Immigrant. Noem Engendered Evil." On the right is snowy ground under a man in a blanket, boxers, and slippers, being led out not by an immigration agent but by... a woman in a brown bodysuit, Darth Vader mask, and red high heeled boots? That part is pretty confusing to me, to be honest.

The seedlist includes quinoa, millet, amaranth, onion skin, and basil. The rest of the seedlist is hidden behind another piece.

"Keep Honking" by Sarah O'Brien
On an orange (painted amaranth) background are the words "KEEP HONKING! I'm listening to ICE getting chased out of the neighborhood" in black basil seed and wild rice. On the black frame is an undulating line of black lentils representing the lanyard for a black lentil whistle in the lower left corner.
-
Untitled? by Kaela Reinardy
The lower left corner has a white cloud, from which is bursting a swirly rainbow of colors. In multiple colors are the longer version of Renee Good's last words: "That's fine dude, I'm not mad at you", spoken to the ICE officer who shot her seconds later. In the lower right corner are the words "For Renee" in white.
This piece used painted seeds, beans, and grains: millet, quinoa, alfalfa, lentil, sorghum, sunflower, farro, amaranth, barley, and radish.

I can't describe the piece on the lower left. Only the upper half is in the photograph and it's weird. It's unrelated to the other three.

The remainder of this thread will be political pieces. First, general 2026 politics, not specifically about Minnesota. I've tried to provide context in the alt text, but I happily accept corrections and additional information. I can't add them to the alt text but they can be part of the thread.

Untitled? by Ann Steeves?
On a background of light and yellow rays emanating from the center are the words "NO AI WAS USED in the making of this seed art".

The seed list and part of the nametag are hidden behind another piece of crop art.

Probably titled something, by something Zindren
The piece has a green split-pea background with a sign made of light-colored millet and brown quinoa (I think). The sign says "A Superior National Forest begins with Climate Action."

The artist label is partially covered by the piece so the creator's first name is not shown, and the seed list is very blurry, so there are words that are probably a title that are illegible in the photo. It does seem to say "Sign of the Times" among the other words. Apologies to the creator for my poor photograph.

Untitled? by Katherine Erickson
The words "Welcome to the UNITED STATES of PRIVATE EQUITY" make up the lower part of this piece. Above them, on the left is an American flag where the stars have been replaced by dollar signs. In the middle is a bird - a vulture? And on the right is a document styled after the constitution but the only legible words are "We the 1%".

Most of the seedlist is hidden behind another piece.

Untitled? by Jennifer OBrien
The background is the words NO KINGS repeated in medium blue painted millet against dark blue painted poppyseed. A crossed-out crown, symbol of the "No Kings" rallies of 2025-2026, is made of corn meal, corn grits, and red lentils. Underneath the crown are the words "NO KINGS" in corn grits, with a yellow picket sign saying "THE MIDTERMS ARE COMING" in the lower right corner.

Crop art at the Minnesota State Fair! It is what it says it is - art made from various parts of crops, primarily seeds, lentils, and grains, occasionally leaves or flowers. For any non-Minnesotans viewing this, I'll start with mostly less political pieces. It's harder than you might think.

Untitled? by Jenny Lau
A red heart with radiating lines is in the upper half of the piece. In the middle are two loons, rising up out of the water to either fly or dance. The words "Forever - MN" appear in black at the bottom. The piece is edged in a wavy border. You can see from the seedlist that the inspiration was a Keith Haring drawing on a US "Forever stamp" where people instead of loons are dancing and holding up the heart.

Crops include white sorghum, red sorghum, french lentil, canola, wild rice, garlic skin, and millet. Any others have been cut off by the photographer's (my) carelessness.

Untitled? by Alice Hogan
In the center are two traditional portrayals of Vikings, with horned helmets. The left is a bearded man with a photo of Governor Tim Walz's face, and the right character is a female with long blond braids and a photo of Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan's face. She holds a scepter topped by what might be a stalk of wheatand stands next to some miniature ears of multi-colored corn. Below them are the words "WELCOME TO MINNESOTA" in blue and green. Behind the two Vikings are a lake or river with swans, a pink house I don't recognize, and a stylized version of the Minneapolis skyline with some of its landmark buildings such as the Foshay Tower and the IDS Center.

The seed list is partially hidden and partially too blurry to read due to the photographer's (my) inability to take good photos.

"Pac-MN" by Meredith Keller
This is a 3 dimensional piece in that the yellow frame of it is moved forward and shaped as if it's an arcade game. The screen has a black background. The words "MINNESOTA STATE FAIR 2026" are written in the Pac-Man font at the top left. the rest of the screen has a map of the fairgrounds making the path that Pac-Man can follow, complete with yellow trails. Some of the yellow trails have the street names spelled out on the seeds. The screen also has red and blue ghosts, but instead of the normal bonus icons we see a pickle, an ear of corn, some pronto pups, and a chocolate chip cookie - all popular foods at the MN State Fair.

The seedlist shows yellow painted mustard seed in a Pac-Man shape, and the rest of the seeds are lined up for Pac-Man to eat: red and blue painted mustard seed, black canola, white, yellow, and green millet, white navy bean, yellow soy bean, and yellow split pea.

This entry was awarded a blue ribbon for first place in its category.

"Minnesota Welcomes You" by Megan Bell
Paul Bunyan, in brown laced up boots, blue jeans, and a pink and ight blue checked shirt and cap, is neeling on the ground. He steadies an axe against the ground in his left hand, while his right hand is outstretched to the viewer. The grass is green, there are autumn colored trees in the background, and a multicolored swirly sky is above. The words "MINNESOTA WELCOMES YOU" are in the foreground.

This piece was made with amaranth, hulled barley, black beans, canola, flax seed, millet, rye berries, and wheatberry. Most of these were painted.
