I thoroughly enjoyed Hild by @nicolaz.bsky.social ! The historical detail about daily life was so vivid--I don't think I've ever felt so clearly what it might have been like 1,000+ years ago. But my favorite was just Hild existing in nature. I couldn't get enough of those bits. #booksky 📚💙

The cover of the novel Hild by Nicola Griffith, showing a young woman dressed in chainmail with wisps of hair escaping against a forest backdrop.

This is a very difficult read, TWs galore, including child sex abuse. It's so much worse and more deeply messed up than I thought (which was bad enough). I appreciated how well written and thoughtful this piece is. I hope his son and his victims are doing OK.

This isn't a hot take or anything, but my goodness, Terry Pratchett was brilliant. Currently reading Feet of Clay and it's sneakily blowing my mind. #booksky 📚💙🪐

Starting off the new year right with a flurry of Terry Pratchett. Finally got hold of Wyrd Sisters, so I'm excited to spend the next few days hanging out with Granny Weatherwax!

I come back often to the quote about believing in the Hogfather and the tooth fairy as practice so you can later believe in love, duty, and justice. ❤️

Good choice! Don't miss reading The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms eventually, but this is a lovely book to layer in there, one of my favorites.

"It becomes a great, twisted thing of dark leaves and thick, winding vines that chokes and withers whatever good things grow in your heart; it feeds on all the hatred your heart can bear-- That is what is in me."--Patricia A. McKillip Seriously if you haven't read this, do it now.

"How did you hate? Did you nurse revenge from a tiny, moon-pale seedling in the night places in your heart, watch it grow and flower and bear dark fruit that hung ripe--ripe for the plucking? ...

"I gave it to you with my name that night and you are its guardian, to treasure it, or let it wither and die. I do not understand you. I am angry with you. I am hurt and helpless, but nothing would fill the ache of the hollowness in me where your name would echo if I lost you."--Patricia A. McKillip

"What do you think love is--a thing to startle from the heart like a bird at every shout or blow? You can fly from me, high as you choose into your darkness, but you will see me always beneath you, no matter how far away, with my face turned to you. My heart is in your heart ...

I just finished The Forgotten Beasts of Eld by Patricia A. McKillip and I am so angry with myself that I slept on this book for so long. I can't remember the last time I enjoyed the actual act of reading words so much--it was so beautifully written! #booksky 💙📚🪐

Clay's Ark messed me up! (Side note for anyone new to the Patternist series: I recommend reading in publication order.)

Having read the sequel, I thought I was prepared, but I was not. This was brutal and unputdownable. She was a prophet. #booksky 💙📚🪐

A few years ago, I read Octavia Butler's Parable of the Talents because I had picked up the ebook at some point. But I still haven't read Parable of the Sower! Now that I have both on my shelf, time to fix that... #booksky 💙📚🪐

Just finished The Sword of Kaigen, which I loved for its action but also for the way the emotional weight of the story actually has a chance to breathe. After this and Blood Over Bright Haven, I cannot wait to see what M.L. Wang (a fellow Knox College grad!) writes next! #booksky 💙📚🪐

My daughter checked out the first Phoebe and Her Unicorn by @danacorn.bsky.social at the library but lost interest (she's a bit too young). Husband and I keep checking them out to read ourselves. They are always a bright sparkly spot in our week--and we can always use those. #booksky 💙📚🪐

As an English major back in the day, I've had my share of forays into medieval lit, but I've never enjoyed any so much as Anne Louise Avery's vibrant and thoughtful retelling of Reynard the Fox. I'm 80 pages in and it's such a delight. Thank you for this @annelouiseavery.bsky.social ! #booksky 💙📚🪐

Thank you for writing it! I read Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn as a teen in the 90s, and it was such a pleasure to revisit it this year and then mow through LKOA.❤️

I loved The Navigator's Children, conclusion of The Last King of Osten Ard series by @tadwilliams.bsky.social, so hard. Dangerous yet wondrous forests! Ancient lore! Ruminations on power and authoritarianism! Flawed yet beautiful relationships! *chef's kiss* 🪐📚 💙
