OTD 7 October 1571, the famous naval battle of Lepanto between the Holy League and the Ottoman Empire took place in the Gulf of Patras. News of the victory of the League sped through Europe and Duke Erich II of Calenberg had a room in his castle in Hann. Münden painted with scenes from the battle.
Detail of a fresco showing several galleys under papal and other christian banners. Fragment of a fresco that once covered a whole chamber in the castle of Hann. Münden. It was commissioned just months after the battle took place.View over Hann. Münden, taken October 7, 2026. The castle clearly towers over the old town and dominates the cityscape.

Everytime I pass this 16th century house in Lüneburg I take comfort in the fact that even "the Luhmann", the sociologist famous for his systems theory, was an ordinary human as we all are, and grew up rather modestly in the family's brewery upstairs of the town's oldest still serving pub.
The 16th century brick house with three storeys and a high roof, situated at Salzstraße am Wasser 1 in Lüneburg, where Niklas Luhmann spent his childhood. The basement is occupied by a cozy pub as was in his time. An entrance in a brick front from ca 1900 with a large sandstone sign Braunbier-Brauerei H. Luhmann. Today apartments and offices, but looks quite run down.

Whence did all that fury come? W. B. Yeats, 1939
A printed poem by W B Yeats. It says:

A Stick of Incense
Whence did all that fury come, From empty tomb or Virgin womb?
Saint Joseph thought the world would melt
But liked the way his finger smelt.

What times do we live in, where an ordinary German bookshop chain offers a casual presentation of banned books - banned not in the usual oppressive countries, but in the US!
A table in a German bookshop with a large sign saying: "Book Bans in the U.S.". On the table books like The Hate U Give or The Handmaid's Tale, The Kite Surfer or The Bluest Eye are presented. I read a lot of SciFi in my teens, Asimov, Heinlein, LeGuin, etc. But when I was 14, Frank Herbert's Dune was like a revelation. Even though I like the two movie versions, they of course cannot even closely convey all the intellectual layers the books offer. Always worth a reread.
