trying these in colour, when I posted them in bw bluesky showed the uploads ok while I created the post, then rendered them all as solid black rectangles when the post went up. Anyone else had that happen? #nature #garden, #sonbahar, #sonbaharbahçesi #photography #blackandwhite
A clump of Colchicum flowers in dappled sunlight, among green leaves; the centre of each petal is pale pink, but they turn to vivid pinks and magentas towards the edge of the petals. Some of the flowers are fading and some have flopped over. The flowers look like crocuses, and are often called 'autumn crocus', but they're actually a different genus. Two opium poppy seed heads side by side against a background of greys and greens where the garden beyond is completely defocused. The seed heads are round, mottled grey and blue-grey, and where they've opened at the top to distribute the seed they're pale brown. At the top, you can see the remains of the stigmas, like a circle of thick petals, and beneath each 'petal' is a rectangular hole where the seeds have shaken out as the seed head blew in the wind. One of the seed heads has broken open at the side.A patch of cyclamen leaves seen from above. The leaves are a stylized heart shape with jagged edges. Some are dark green with pale marbling following the shape of the leaf, leaving a dark arrow-head in the middle of the leaf. The biggest cyclamen in the group has plain leaves in a pale grey-green, often called 'pewter'. One single weed in a bright fresh green has poked its way up between the leaves.A diagonal line crosses the image, from top left to bottom right; it's the irregular line at the edge of a lawn that hasn't been well tended, so it's all spikes of grass in the upper section of the image. Below the line is a stone slab made of warm brown sandstone, with a riven surface. Scattered across the image are dried rowan leaves and scarlet rowan berries. Some of the berries have been crushed underfoot and are turning brown.

The full text of the comment (on the West's destruction and wars) has all the words between 'One day' and 'everyone' darkened. The full text is 'One day, when it's safe, when there's no personal downside to calling a thing what it is, when it's too late to hold anyone accountable, everyone will always have been against this.'

finally got to the big clearout of art college stuff, this was 2nd year when I started with Chinese ink and either brush or bamboo pen. Transformed my drawing, because it forces you to commit to the line / stroke, no hesitation. #lifedrawing
a drawing of a seated figure, made with a broad brush with Chinese ink, the lines move from broad solid marks through broad marks with streaks from the bristles, to narrow lines with sharp turns. The whole figure is represented in an impressionistic way with only a dozen or so strokes.

black and white photo of a woman in a casual robe, sitting on stone steps by a garden wall .. the steps and wall built of random shaped stone. The robe falls open to show her legs, gracefull extended. The hood of the robe is over her head, but her face looks out from it with a wistful expression. The woman and the wall are in dappled sunlight, to the left, the top of the steps are in shadow.

colour photo of a young woman wearing a black kimono, open at the front to show the centre line of her body; one arm is across her chest - we see just the forearm, the rest hidden by the kimono, one arm is at her side, we see only her hand. One leg is lit, the other leg is lost in shadow and the drape of the kimono. She is looking directly at the camera. The background is dark grey.

the #medrese in #Istanbul, in 2009 #streetphotography #reportage I started shooting vertical panoramas after seeing Horst Hamann's photos of New York. I reposted one earlier, sadly not a great version; the book, New York Vertical, is well worth a look if you're into panoramas.
a colour photo of the interior of a nargile cafe in Istanbul. The cafe is in a former medrese, with tall domed ceilings. The ceilings are cream, but covered with patterned motifs, and the arches that hold the domes are painted in alternating brick and cream. There is an old, worn stone floor, and there are oriental rugs in deep red colours hanging on the walls. Small tables in the foreground have tops made of colourful patterned tiles. It's daytime, and the whole scene has a light, airy feel.

by Horst Hamann, from New York Vertical, 2003. #panorama #streetphotography
a black and white photo by Horst Hamann, of New York. It's a tall panorama looking across the city from a high viewpoint. Almost straight down below, in deep shadow, are streets with cars parked, in the middle distance, still below the skyline, is a swathe of medium to tall buildings, and in the distance are skyscrapers white against a dull sky. There is a sense of depth, of distance, and of the city crowded with buildings and man-made structures of all sizes.

careful observers of the background will see that the cezve (basket for coals) is being pressed onto the head of the #nargile with such force that the whole room is tilting. Important to capture these fleeting localised tectonic movements. #Istanbul #İstanbul #reportage #streetphotography

Ted Grant: “When you photograph people in color, you photograph their clothes. But when you photograph people in Black and white, you photograph their souls.” But a rug isn't a person; colour is part of its soul. Despite the appeal of composition. bw for the #medrese project, but with exceptions.

the ceiling of the medrese / nargile cafe in #Istanbul #streetphotography
A black and white photo of the ceiling of a one-time medrese which now houses several nargile cafes. The original ceiling is a row of small cupolas in stone with a paint or plaster finish; some of the plaster is flaking, but on some of it you can see calligraphic motifs. Harsh spotlights shine up from the foot of each cupola. In counterpoint to the ceiling's series of curves is a modern grid of steel bars supporting strip lights and heaters.

3am in the nargile cafe #Istanbul #medrese #streetphotography
The stone floor has been washed down. In the middle distance a glass display case holds a dozen or so nargiles for sale. The light from the display case shines on the wet floor.the nargile cafe late at night. The door into one of the side rooms has been closed but through the bars you can see the TV is still on. On the right of the image is the doorway into the kitchen. On the far wall of the kitchen hang the marpuc for the nargiles, the leather tube through which the air is drawn to the mouthpiece. On the left of the image is one of the wooden benches, and emerging from beneath the bench is a cat.the nargile cafe, a darkened room with just a couple of lights on the high ceiling. All the benches are empty. The Arabic calligraphy is visible framed on the walls. At the far end of the room a single figure reaches for the switch to turn out the lights.

Leucojum vernum in the garden today (same family as snowdrops). Leucojums and snowdrops, so much rain that some of the petals have become translucent. Never seen such a marked effect before. Not quite like Diphylleia grayi (the 'skeleton flower') but getting there. #garden #photography #macro
macro photo of a single young flower of Leucojum vernum, the spring snowflake. The flower has raindrops all over it. The flower fills the frame but in reality is about an inch from top to bottom. The upper part of the flower is almost a globe, with the lower part elongating down into claw-like petals. The tips of the petals are yellow-green, the rest of the flower is white, and has become translucent.
