Also tried it with Tocharian B, which feels like an interesting substrate language for long-ago places on a fantasy map. Some name-parts repeat, like "Tronk" which means "cave" or "hollow". It's unrelated to "Trank" which means "lament".
A fantasy map of a continent with Tocharian B fantasy place names like Ratre Kucatak, Walkwe Kercci, Aryatewe Trank, Mortartsetse Tronk, and Kaumpirko Tronk.

Testing the ability of name generation to handle multiple languages. Because I've been reading a Yiddish translation of LotR, I went with Yiddish, so this is possibly the first Yiddish-language fantasy placename generation algorithm? #ttrpg #fantasy #worldbuilding
A fantasy map of a continent with Yiddish fantasy place names like Gedile Kheyfets, Yankel's Geret, Mekhashefslevade, Epl Veyg, and Pater fun Bosyaks Grub.

At this point I'm running out of ways to show everything going on with settlements on the same map? Taking this as a sign we're just about maxed out on complexity and I need to start generating GIS compatible outputs #fantasy #ttrpg #worldbuilding

A new version of the name generation demo is live! This one adds some new fields, fixes some bugs, and drastically increases the vocabulary. If you could click around a bit and let me know if it works, I'd really appreciate that. #ttrpgs #worldbuilding #maps malkacodes.github.io
Sample output from the context aware name generator, where selecting "arcane", "ancient", and "cursed" has generated the name "Accursed Bloodburn".

Somehow this project has gone from "it sure would be cool to have fantasy mapmaking software that did the things I wanted it to do" to "guess I need to learn web app development" but a very rough name generation demo is in the works. #fantasy #ttrpg #mapmaking #worldbuilding
A rough demo of a fantasy name generator that lets you select attributes (e.g. temperature, elevation, latitude) and outputs a procedurally generated fantasy name. I've selected the attributes "rich", "port", and "arcane", and it's returned the name Shadowport.

Procedural fantasy place name generation that takes into account the attributes of the places it's naming is turning out to be trickier than expected. No notes about Magemirestead, Blood Willowhaven, or Yellowoakfort. Less certain about Wallhall, Fort Snowoak, and the multiple Moon Villages.
Magesmirestead
Farpine Crossing
Oakhall
Blood Willowhaven
Fort Mire
Moon Village
Guinevere's Field
Blessedhall
Whitewind
Bloodwall
Wallhall
Redwall Manor
Fort Snowoak
Bloodhollow Abode
Fort Willow
Yellowpine
Yellowoakfort
Moon Village

If I want place names that accurately reflect the attributes of the places I'm naming (and not just using RNG to name a remote mining town in the mountains Angel Moon Bay) I need to tell the computer which words correspond to which attributes. A lot of mind-numbing spreadsheet-building this week.

Part of what's fun about procedural map generation is that sometimes you get worlds that don't really work out the way they're supposed to, but there's interesting storytelling potential anyway. Like, this world has no holy cities, but lots of cursed ones. #fantasymaps #worldbuilding #ttrpg #fantasy

Not sure how gif quality turns out on here but check out this procedurally generated world map going through ten eras. We get settlements cycling between small towns, ancient cities, cursed sites, ruined cities, and back to uninhabited settlement sites. #fantasymaps #worldbuilding #ttrpg #fantasy

Enjoy a very rough draft of place name generation complete with some awful fantasy placeholder names #fantasy #ttrpg #worldbuilding

Working on settlement placement and yeah this is the part of the whole fantasy mapmaking software that I've wanted to get to the whole time. The dots are potential settlement locations and the rings are the radius around them they need to control to be viable. #fantasymaps #ttrpg #worldbuilding

Got inland lakes working! Took a really brute-force approach of finding inland low points and filling them up from there until precipitation plus evaporation didn't provide enough water to go any deeper. #fantasymaps #worldbuilding #ttrpg

In between videos I've been putting in some time fixing parts of the basic terrain map that had been bothering me (especially edge oceans and island generation) and it's still not perfect but this is way closer to what I'd originally envisioned. #fantasymaps #worldbuilding #ttrpg

Starting to feel more satisfied with terrain generation and the underlying magic layer #fantasymaps #worldbuilding #ttrpg

The slime mould algorithm is working! I can generate interesting organic flows between magic sites. Very pleased with this. #fantasy #worldbuilding #ttrpg #maps

Trying to use slime mould growth algorithms to build ley lines that aren't just boring geodesics. So far I think this seems promising? Going to take some messing around with parameters though. #fantasy #worldbuilding #ttrpg #maps #cartography

And a couple more comparisons:

Tweaked the coastlines for slightly more steepness and added more islands! It's subtle, but I'm really pleased with how this is looking. Here are some before and after comparisons: #fantasy #worldbuilding #ttrpg #maps

Finally graduated to some more realistically-built oceans! Very psyched with how this is turning out. #fantasy#worldbuilding #ttrpg

Building a gallery of coastline inspiration for fantasy maps and realizing that a lot of what makes a map look useful for fantasy worldbuilding goes way beyond what Perlin noise can accomplish.
I think the Clayoquot Sound is top tier for fantastic hyperrealistic coastlines:

Look at those islands! Those straits! Those long glacial lakes! This is the kind of map where adventurers could go on a quest and discover remote secrets. The kind of map where you can imagine crystalline bridges or fantasy paddlewheelers or barges pulled by giant tortoises. Excellent geography, even if it's going to be basically impossible to simulate with Perlin noise or anything like it.The Virgin Islands and this chunk of the edge of Puerto Rico is also excellent coastline design:

Look how the islands trail off from the mainland! Great design for complex political intrigue, a campaign that takes you all the way from the mainland in the west to the end of the archipelago in the west, an overall direction and flow that even St Croix way to the south runs parallel to. Also tricky to think about how to get these long parallel flows from something like Perlin noise, but it's definitely a feature of satisfying-looking island chains.Auckland has such a ridiculous coastline for a metropolitan city it does not even seem plausibly realistic:

Big deep harbours on both sides, with a city on the isthmus in between. So many opportunities for naturally delineated districts, and multiple ports and wharves with wildly different vibes. Rangitoto right there north of the city just hanging out as a giant obvious volcano in the middle of all of this.Lombok, Sumbawa, and this whole stretch of the Lesser Sunda Islands is also a prime archipelago:

Look at all those volcanos! Look at those narrow straits, those tiny islets, those isolated geographies - great for fantasy worldbuilding with a ton of complex polities, or a narrative that requires visiting a bunch of nearby locations that are plausibly very different in vibe. The coastlines also have very different fractal roughness in different places, which makes this map look like it could be 100 km across or it could be the whole world.

I'm working on fantasy map generation software that builds hyperrealistic terrain, creates interesting and locally consistent placenames, and outputs everything as shapefiles for editing and overlaying. First step is Perlin noise terrain generation! #worldbuilding #ttrpg #fantasy
Perlin noise coloured and contoured to look like a topographic terrain map.
