Multnomah County Chair Jessica Vega Pederson has declared a state of emergency due to dangerous heat. Three daytime cooling centers are open starting at noon - 9 p.m. Trimet is offering rides to anyone going to a cooling space starting at 11 a.m. Full details on centers and library hours below. ⬇️
Call 2-1-1 or check multco.us/hot for the latest information ​​and a full map of cooling locations. Information may change.

Cooling centers open Monday, Aug. 11, 2025, from noon to 9 p.m., until conditions improve. All sites ADA accessible. Pets welcome.

No one will be turned away. Call 2-1-1 for transportation help. Trimet (trimet.org/planner) allows free rides to cooling centers.

This year, we held our 7th annual Eat & Greet where nearly 800 neighbors, housed and unhoused, came together for food, drinks, music and connection—and we are preparing to break ground on a 20-unit Workforce Village to house neighbors engaged in our employment programs.

- Acqua Apartments: CHNW’s former hotel conversion in Gresham has been transformed into a 75-unit student housing community. Funded through Project Turnkey, it offered a year of free rent to ARCS participants attending MHCC. The property operates at 60% AMI rent, with utilities.

- Abigail Court: CHNW’s former hotel conversion in Gresham is now a 75-unit student housing community. Funded via Project Turnkey, it provides free rent in the first year to ARCS participants studying at Mt. Hood Community College.

Current and Upcoming Initiatives - Affordable Rents for College Students (ARCS) program, launched in 2020 in response to rising student homelessness and provides subsidized housing with wraparound services to help low-income, housing-insecure students persist in their education.

Unlike traditional housing providers, CHNW removes requirements like high credit scores, large deposits, and parental co-signers, focusing instead on student stability and success. CHNW owns and operates six (soon to be seven) properties throughout the Portland metro area.

College Housing NW is a Portland-based nonprofit that has been serving students for over 50 years. Founded in 1969 by students at Portland State University, CHNW provides deeply affordable, student-centered housing designed to reduce barriers and increase postsecondary success.

They are leasing up a new building in Tualatin, Plambeck Gardens, and they have started construction on a new community in Tigard, Woodland Hearth. They'll begin construction soon in Portland on Jamii Court (family housing), and in Beaverton on Meadowlark Place, for older adults.

At this time, CPAH is focusing on kids’ summer programming and activities for older adults, community clean-ups organized by our own Resident Advisory Committee, and ongoing resident services work addressing housing instability for all residents who need assistance.

Within a year, the agency had pioneered an integrated system of compassionate care in Old Town that would become a model for the country. Now, CCC serves around 16,000 people each year with compassionate support to help them become self-sufficient and productive.

With resettlement, refugees face barriers like: severe housing shortage, high housing and rental costs, language barriers, lack of economic history, and limited access to employment to name a few.

And as is happening nationwide, many refugees who arrive here in Multnomah County are not just dealing with resettlement, but oftentimes the harsh reality of homelessness and lack of support and resources in a system that is already overburdened and straining.
