Evan Muise @muise.bsky.social · 08/06/2026I don't think that directing a mentee or student to do something is not rewarding, as they obtain the reward rather than you. You receive the reward of watching the mentee/student thrive. This is all taken away when it is offshored to the auto-fill. 001
Evan Muise @muise.bsky.social · 08/06/2026I recognize that it does have very real efficiencies associated with it - if you can identify and remove hallucinations or understand when it makes errors. Personally, I find it more rewarding to do something, rather than to direct a glorified auto-fill to do it, and then correct the auto-fill. 100
Evan Muise @muise.bsky.social · 08/06/2026By lowering the barrier to entry for things like programming, it is sapping away the understanding of how programming actually works. On top of that it hallucinates. I believe I would be rightly vilified if I were to hallucinate random code that breaks programs and passed it off to colleagues. 100
Evan Muise @muise.bsky.social · 08/06/2026I find myself increasingly dismayed/angered/upset by AI (here meaning generative AI). It takes the joy out of programming, it removes the learning associated with the deep thinking needed for effective writing, and typically generates subpar writing to begin with. It's an environmental calamity. 110

Evan Muise @muise.bsky.social · 21/10/2025Thanks to my coauthors Nicholas Coops (@irssubc.bsky.social), Chris Mulverhill, @txominhermos.bsky.social, @coleburton.bsky.social, and Stephen Ban for their help and guidance along the way! 020
Evan Muise @muise.bsky.social · 21/10/2025I'm really excited about this methodology - it provides a data-driven approach to assess ecological integrity that strongly aligns with many of its definitions, and the coarsened exact matching approach can be used to assess reference state availability! Stay tuned for more :) 110
Evan Muise @muise.bsky.social · 21/10/2025We then compared these dissimilarity values to the Canadian human footprint, and found that high levels of anthropogenic pressures impact structural integrity, but not functional integrity. 110
Evan Muise @muise.bsky.social · 21/10/2025We combined coarsened exact matching and sigma dissimilarity to compare all environmentally similar forests to high-quality protected reference states in Strathcona Park which accounts for protected area biases and accounts for collinearity between and within structural and functional attributes. 110
Evan Muise @muise.bsky.social · 21/10/2025Happy to share that the third paper from my PhD is now published! We estimated remote sensing-derived forest structural and functional integrity on Vancouver Island and examined the influence of anthropogenic pressure on these metrics. There was lots of great discussion surrounding primary forest definitions and methods for mapping them across BC and Canada 🌳 Thanks @wwfcanada.bsky.social for hosting an excellent workshop! 🙌 0123
