I am thrilled and proud beyond measure to support the amazing workers who create and design the games I and my loved ones have spent a lifetime playing. I implore everybody to sign the petition and signal boost the campaign as far and wide as we can!

instead of paying human money to spend 1 fun hour deckbuilding and 3 hours getting rocked at the LGS, I download arena, get rocked by a faceless cypher, play 3 games of standard, and immediately uninstall, all for free. art of the deal

Read something good while you're waiting in line for secret lair! Or don't buy the secret lair deck (you probably don't need it) and read this anyway 💜💜💜

today @hipstersofthecoast.com I reflect on how hard it is to actually judge a Magic set, in part because Magic sets are virtual processes as much as discrete entities. Give it a read! (special thanks to @trasgomorph.bsky.social for much-needed support!) www.hipstersofthecoast.com/2026/09/i-ha...

I Have No Idea What Makes a Magic Set Good (You Probably Don’t Either)
Ryan grapples with the concept of quality in Magic set design. How do we evaluate it, and are we giving sets a fair look when we do?

all this feels super true. it’s funny because I think there’s genuine value in identifying specific ways that sets don’t respond to certain creative challenges (I myself have done that a lot), but it feels so mindbreaking to attempt a totalizing judgment about a set as tho it’s just one thing!

circling back in as I reflect on the profound visual creativity of reality fracture so far. It’s a testament to the incommensurability between idea and execution: even though I don’t particularly like the concept, the concepts and compositions have been stellar

The Zeta Set is several firsts for Magic: the first SLD lootbox, the first use of public domain art, and… the first set that begs us to make it ourselves, but better. Have a party. Invite friends, plus Fiskar and Elmer. Let’s DIY this poser set already.

It depends! I think it’s key that Library of Leng gives the option, so you can ditch stuff you want but then keep stuff you really need—while still getting discard triggers, which is what my deck goes for

I mention this but it’s been very funny to contrast my extreme suspicion of this set’s concept with Alison Luhrs’ amazing writing. I think it’s because it’s ultimately about the characters rather than the sus alt-universe stuff (famous last words since the story is only half-done)

main problem w Coyote v. Acme is that it tries to sell you on this message that Wile E Coyote is defined by his perseverance instead of his white hot suburban dad-style irrational hatred

Yes!! I turn this over a lot in my mind—what kinds of worlds emerge from mechanics that basically demand battling between opposing forces. Which maybe is just reflective of the dialectical nature of history, but still would be interesting to imagine

I've been hyped about this one for awhile, Ryan breaks down the corporate obsession with multiverses and what it means when every iteration of a major IP is diverted into one unending stream of content.

gosh thank YOU!! agreed on convergent evolution--great phrase for it. I go back and forth a lot. I think the Flash of Two Worlds was one of the more ingenious ideas in modern pop culture, and I've discussed before how much I love bringing weird forgotten stuff into the fold. but also, I've noticed

anyway, I put a lot of passion into this article, and I hope you give it a read! it also includes my searing takedown of Spider-Man: No Way Home, the most sickening movie of the 2000s

Dominarian Plowshare @mtgplowshare.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
this gets especially grimy, I think, when it overlaps with real people. FRA takes two cards designed by and depicting real people, PLAYERS, and turns them into metaphysical constants--alt-versions that are evacuated of human individuality and held as intellectual property.

Dominarian Plowshare @mtgplowshare.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
I don't mean this article as some kind of takedown--I bet the set will be fun, and Alison Luhrs' FRA fiction is lovely! But there's an unsettling principle in this kind of storytelling: we're told to imagine other worlds but are carefully instructed to keep it in the franchise's existing vocabulary.
Rosewater’s question is an interesting enough question in one way, but the very act of asking it reflects the set’s basic, perhaps troubling aesthetic presumption. The suggestion is that in a multiverse full of infinite possibilities and permutations, the most interesting possible thing is if one famous Magic card looked a bit different.

The logic here is strikingly similar to what we saw above with comic book cinematic universes. We’re asked to imagine the boldest things in the world--there might be another world out there, one in which things didn’t turn out this way!--but then we’re carefully instructed that this world will contain the same basic elements we’re familiar with.
