Statement from Volkan Baga’s art broker Mark Aronowitz

Hi everyone. What started as an exciting day celebrating the reveal of Volkan Baga's new Jace card quickly turned into a difficult situation when questions of art theft were raised online.

I want to provide some clear context: Volkan followed the exact creative brief he was assigned. In fact, he specifically checked with the art director prior to painting regarding the background swirl and overall mood, and was instructed to proceed with that exact composition.

Wizards of the Coast has since issued an official statement clarifying the matter:

"We’ve seen some of the discussion around the art of Jace, Multiverse Architect by Volkan Baga and Breach the Multiverse by Liiga Smilshkalne and wanted to make a few things clear.

First, the art direction given to Volkan was to directly reference this piece into the art. Much of the visual storytelling in Reality Fracture centers on Jace utilizing or incorporating powerful magic he has learned from events he has experienced. This was a direct, intentional call back to that moment to indicate that, in his efforts to rid the multiverse of Phyrexia, Jace had become the very thing he sought to eradicate.

Second, Volkan created this piece traditionally, from a first sketch done by hand up through the final painted version.

Finally, Magic has long created visual callbacks in its art to evoke connection through its shared multiverse. This has spurred some additional internal conversations about how we communicate those callbacks to artists who create iconic pieces, but it is very important to us to create a shared world that feels unified. This includes use of symbols, characters, and important moments throughout art.

We’ve been in contact with both artists and appreciate measured discussions around these important topics."

So, as much as I think the Orzhov Niv Miz is a pretty decent Flavour Win, one of the better Echoverse desgins imo, practically it's a pretty clunky Well of Lost Dreams. Some may say less versatile depnding on how you want to use it. I wouldn't choose Niv over Well in my Karlov list for example

As for the new leaks/releases...we may have some thoughts for episodes and even some guests. Overall it's an incredibly positive move to make soace for some lore heavy products again. Though the cynic in me thinks maybe this our sugar to sweeten the bitter UB pill haha but thats just me.

Kamigawa being constantly at war is maybe a little tired, though one of the benefits of Omenpaths is seeing how individual Planes deal with existential threats, whether its with Mechs or like in Strixhaven, straight up bigotry. Having conflict in each setting makes it easier for the game to work

Excited for Zhalfir but don't know where to start? I've got you covered. Zhalfir was the primary location for Mirage and Visions, Magic's first internally led stories (and a big part of the ramp up into the classic Weatherlight saga). It told the story of the Mirage War.

I still think about this key art from Lost Caverns of Ixalan regularly. This to me is the perfect level of pop culture homage and inspiration and why Duskmourn at the time felt heavy handed in comparison. I hope we go back to Ixalan several more times and get lots more of this

It wasn't quite the plot I expected to be honest, but I honestly loved where it went and how it treated its characters. And it also went someway to answer questions on plot threads mostly abandoned which is cool. Love that we see more of Teferi's lineage doing their thing.

Yeh thats a very good read. I've also been thinking that Lluwen's story and the experience of the characters in Omens of Chaos, I'm also starting to see alot of parallels between Stixhaven and real world class divides present in higher education in the US & UK.

The #mtg offering from a UK highstreet retailer (that I really rate for the record). One lone Lorwyn Precon and the rest is TMNT and ATLA. Either Lorwyn was so popular that it flew off the shelves, or UB is too lucrative to waste shelf space on other products. Either way I think this blows.
