Needless to say, I couldn't agree more, Darren. A lot of this is due to the confusion around what we mean by the word obesity. BMI is a population-level indicator of a risk factor. The disease of obesity is an outcome. We talk like 'obesity' is just one thing and so we end up talking nonsense.

Public health researchers (like myself) want to take an upstream view of obesity, focusing on environmental factors rather than individual behaviour. In this talk, I argue this is not possible with obesity. Whether we like it or not, obesity just IS an individual and moralised concept.
