Famine-era ancestry - This weekend, descendants of two couples, married during the Irish Famine, reunited. Distant cousins from both lines convened, with Dad's help, to explore ancestral places & share stories with my American half-cousin (related via her mGF to my pGM & mGM to my pGF). #Genealogy

Some parents had not yet decided on a name for their child when the the census came. Robert and Ethel Evans came up with the novel name 'XYZ' for their child. Elsewhere, parents were told they could use 'Baby' or 'Tootsie'! Find out more in 'A History of the Census Takers' - #GenHour #Ancestry

How did employers recruit their servants in the 18th century?
In a previous article I looked at those who worked at Kenwood House, which led me on to take a look at how employees were recruited. Many servants acquired their position via word of mouth and were able to supply a good reference from a previous employer, although of course, at that time there was no legal requirement to provide one, but without such a reference it would have been virtually impossible to find employment. I have also looked at the typical wages of servants in a previous article which can be found…

So much fun earlier this evening discovering the service record of an Irish veteran of the Crimean war. His service of 1 year and 11 months ended when he was shot in the neck.
