none of this stuff has reached any kind of resolved state and ignore anyone who tells you it has

entering a period where a) we have an app that’s existed since 2009 which is coded so badly nobody wants to touch it but which there apparently isn’t budget to rewrite b) we are within weeks of running out of paid project work because everyone is just vibecoding everything now

the nature of humanity, in my experience, has very very little to do with computers and phones and commodity production, in my experience of it, no matter how much of our time might be spent on those things. those things are *counter* to the nature of humanity!!

I honestly find the idea that LLM technology ‘changes the nature of humanity’ … offensive? like … what the fuck do you think the nature of humanity is, if you think that?

maybe you can use LLM development tools cleverly enough to avoid debt. maybe you can even use them to pay it off. are you? are they?
000
mseries @mseries.eurosky.social · 09/09/2026
a lot of people don’t really understand what technical debt is — used correctly it’s a tool, essential even. but the whole point is that *it comes due*

mseries @mseries.eurosky.social · 09/09/2026
writing code faster without needing to properly understand it or see how it can be maintained is pretty much the definition of technical debt. LLMs accelerate the ability to accumulate technical debt.

so if you want that to speak for you, lmfao. if you want to use that to write code for you, caveat.

LLMs are bullshit machines, and I say that as a highly skilled bullshitter. regurgitating barely understood fragments of widely-sourced content calculated to pass well enough — that’s the literal definition of bullshit

EXTREMELY unedifying, btw, to see this couched in apology. 'you might be feeling grief or loss about this but you'll have to put that aside if you want to stay in the industry' etc. lots and lots of questions about this stuff remain to be answered. don't be fooled.

(saw in the wild yesterday another 'everyone's using it so you're going to have to get on board' & AGAIN a) yes it's useful for particular things, NOBODY has figured out how to do engineering in the large with it b) 'all the fortune 500s are using it now' should be regarded as a WARNING)

delighted* that we’re now barrelling headlong into a new era of janky throwaway software because Code is Cheap Now and you can just Build It When You Need It

looking forward to another mad scramble at work as global multinational clients sprint to humble themselves at the feet of the world's biggest idiot again

this is not coming from a position of ignorance btw, I’ve built fairly significant stuff with claude code (hated it) and it’s definitely changed things at work, but not for the better imo

mseries @mseries.eurosky.social · 22/08/2026
on the alt cos work stuff but, I basically just do not understand why people want to use LLM products? I don’t get it. what are you getting out of it?? every day I have to pretend this is all normal and it just … isn’t?

after retros now someone will use claude to quickly put together actual code which addresses 'process issues' discussed during the retro. this is not what retros are for. retros are for listening to people's grievances-disguised-as-process-issues, taking careful notes, and then ignoring them

one thing I'm starting to really dislike about claude code is that project managers etc are learning that they can get anything they like. you want a little dashboard for that? sure ting! claude make me a dashboard. then some poor fucker winds up maintaining all this shit

mseries @mseries.eurosky.social · 22/06/2026
and the idea you can run a court case like that *only* on the bare cost of the case itself is nonsense. who's paying the administrators, the fundraisers, the people who spend time making pointless accounts on platforms where everyone hates you?

mseries @mseries.eurosky.social · 22/06/2026
oh rowling donated 70k. about a quarter of the total raised ha ha. just normal grassroots fundraising!

you are ostensibly an important cultural force, I have (iirc) 32 followers, but you’ve been replying to me for days. who’s winning here?

fascinating! which ‘individuals’ are funding your incredibly expensive high profile court cases?

oh so who does pay you then? is this information available anywhere?

are you actually listening to anything anyone in this thread is saying? trans women in men’s prisons will be raped and killed, or face solitary confinement for their ‘safety’. you are attempting to paint out your bigotry by calling trans women ‘males’.

does the heritage foundation pay you to argue with people online or would you say it’s just your passion?

‘gender critical’ is a men’s rights movement in drag

seeing threads like this more and more, and encountered the same sort of thing irl, and I'm becoming convinced that using these things for any length of time genuinely damages your cognitive ability

women are disproportionately supportive of trans rights, especially younger woman and lesbians. so according to your logic, women, especially younger women and lesbians, are disproportionately sexist and misogynist?

reading LLM code is like reading the code of a junior dev who's trying to be clever. they've ingested the *style* but not the *reason*.

there's a delight in *seeing why someone did something* and realising it's the key to understanding and being able to follow the train of thought.

fundamentally LLMs don't, of course, have *sensibilities*. they can output code that looks superficially clean and organised but which has no *meaning*. good human devs have a sense of what's pleasing, what's understandable and maintainable. good code is satisfying, like a good crossword clue.

thought and chatted about it with him for ~2 mins and we came up with a really simple solution. this is quite common now, at work, having to talk people down from astronomical 'solutions' they've convinced themselves are the 'only way to do it'

colleague put up a PR today written by claude which was an attempt to solve a simple problem and was ... just ridiculously complex and hard to follow. but colleague was adamant it was a complex problem that required comparing git branches etc etc and there was no other way to do it
