entering a period where a) we have an app that’s existed since 2009 which is coded so badly nobody wants to touch it but which there apparently isn’t budget to rewrite b) we are within weeks of running out of paid project work because everyone is just vibecoding everything now

I honestly find the idea that LLM technology ‘changes the nature of humanity’ … offensive? like … what the fuck do you think the nature of humanity is, if you think that?

writing code faster without needing to properly understand it or see how it can be maintained is pretty much the definition of technical debt. LLMs accelerate the ability to accumulate technical debt.

LLMs are bullshit machines, and I say that as a highly skilled bullshitter. regurgitating barely understood fragments of widely-sourced content calculated to pass well enough — that’s the literal definition of bullshit

delighted* that we’re now barrelling headlong into a new era of janky throwaway software because Code is Cheap Now and you can just Build It When You Need It

looking forward to another mad scramble at work as global multinational clients sprint to humble themselves at the feet of the world's biggest idiot again

on the alt cos work stuff but, I basically just do not understand why people want to use LLM products? I don’t get it. what are you getting out of it?? every day I have to pretend this is all normal and it just … isn’t?

after retros now someone will use claude to quickly put together actual code which addresses 'process issues' discussed during the retro. this is not what retros are for. retros are for listening to people's grievances-disguised-as-process-issues, taking careful notes, and then ignoring them

hey @forwomen.scot I notice you haven’t posted anything in two weeks. your followers (approx 250 confused american liberals) miss your wisdom and guidance!

co-worker said to me today ‘AI isn’t going away’ and, dunno what to tell ya man. everything’s going away

one thing I'm starting to really dislike about claude code is that project managers etc are learning that they can get anything they like. you want a little dashboard for that? sure ting! claude make me a dashboard. then some poor fucker winds up maintaining all this shit

does the heritage foundation pay you to argue with people online or would you say it’s just your passion?

seeing threads like this more and more, and encountered the same sort of thing irl, and I'm becoming convinced that using these things for any length of time genuinely damages your cognitive ability

colleague put up a PR today written by claude which was an attempt to solve a simple problem and was ... just ridiculously complex and hard to follow. but colleague was adamant it was a complex problem that required comparing git branches etc etc and there was no other way to do it

that new j*hn r*bb book looks attractive but I would need to know he's got a good editor. his one on goth was borderline unreadable

just seen first instance of a (smart and diligent) colleague happily generating obviously-claude code to do something we already have in a battle-tested library

this is a lovely piece of writing and, although niko doesn’t say this outright, it crystallises something I’ve been trying to get out:

been thinking about the various reasons I’m uncomfortable using claude etc for work and a big one is I just don’t like the idea that I’m not *learning* stuff

I have fridays off and I look forward to them so much — a few hours where I can play music, arse about with electronics, whatever. do stuff that feels good! and I wish I were able to ask my colleagues who are spending their time instructing agents: does this actually feel good, to you?

this is 100% true. people are being explicitly or obliquely threatened over this stuff. I think in the tech industries especially at the moment it’s taking your livelihood in your hands to be even slightly oppositional about it.

at work we're now having to take action to delay automated dependency updates because people are using LLMs at scale to exploit code vulnerabilities for supply chain attacks

the more I see people thinking it's absolutely fine to use LLM products for stuff that it's absolutely not fine for, the more I think LLMs have created a sort of reverse turing test, where you suddenly find out that people who seemed normal & clever have just been going through human-like motions

SO as I was saying about google -- they are basically just a service that makes money from advertising and licensing. they love to make themselves out to be at the white-hot forefront of technological revolution, but they're not and they haven't been for years -- decades even
