The trouble is, it is hard to predict when and how fast buyers will shift from petrol to electric. Ford for failed with the timing of their F150 EV. Then everyone thought it will take longer. But they were wrong again - it is happening right now, not in 5years. Technologieoffenheit is innocent.

Yea using AI to code teaching demos is awesome. I coded a cool demonstration of the priniciple of univariance, trichromacy and colour mixing for the class. It was good enough that I think about 20-30% of my students understood why one cannot mix the equivalent of pure monochromatic cyan.

You've got me thinking, Derek. Could there apparent failure of binding without actual binding? I agree, not straightforward to imagine how that could be. One could rephrase it as "some failure of reconstruction of the visual world that then looks like a binding problem." Not sure that solves ...

Yea, but they won't if you continuously cool them. That's the point. And it does coincide with solar production. Which brings us back to rooftop solar.

A well insulated building will keep its cool for longer - just like its warmth. So probably a small air conditioning system would go a long way. And it can supplement heating in autumn and spring when solar is aplenty. Simple - not a perfect solution for everything, but a great stopgap.

Good stuff Derek, however, maybe I am simply confused, but your description of the demos (i.e. "the green bars in Supplemental Movie #5") needs a little fixing up. I can't see anything green in the spatial conflict demo at the bottom left titled "5. Motion induced spatial..." It's red blue on black.

If you privatise the profits from fossil fuels, you can’t keep socialising the costs of the damage. Those who’ve profited should pay their fair share of the impacts. That’s why Spain’s push for an EU oil and gas tax to help fund climate adaptation is worth supporting. www.ft.com/content/86da...

Besides, how many consider his much CO or dirt a litre of petrol creates before it flows out of your bowser?

Mark Schira @mschira.bsky.social · 02/09/2026
Just think it through, we have a Hyundai Inster, that has a 49kWh battery, which is good for 350 to 400km. 49kWh is the equivalent of about 5.5l of petrol. How dirty would these 5 litres need to be to be dirtier than 30l? Besides we are mostly charging from our own solar system.

I only started reading it, but it didn’t start good. like ” when comparing carbon footprint, we need to consider the entire chain, not only the tailpipe “ duh of course we need to do that. But that sentence implies respective were in the habit of not doing that . Which is obviously bullshit.

Rarely appreciated fact: A typical EV has about 5 to 8l petrol equivalent in their battery. 1l of petrol has a massive 9kWh. EV batteries are between 40 and 70 kWh, some larger. 70kWh equals about 8l of petrol. EVs drive about 400kms with that. Our Hyundai Inster: 49kW doing about 340 to 380km.

Truth is, it was rather obvious about 5 years ago, and car manufacturers DID react. The biggest issue they had/have was/is predicting how fast or slow it will happen. But the hard facts are EV is a superior technique in most situations. Not all situations currently though.

Cool video, but you lost me at: "the bottom doesn't know anything has changed". That's obviously not a very useful model. There is no knowing. At any moment in time the bottom is pulled down by gravity and pulled up by the bits above, that pull up force needs to collapse before it moves. ... ... ..

Or think about the fact that it is generally acceptable to lie the sky to earth if this helps you sell your product. The entire business is founded on not honouring the truth, and I believe this is one of the reasons why we have become O.K. with being lied to. The harm of THAT is massive, too.

Unpopular: While problematic, arguably dangerous, I fear we will have no choice but to use some geo engineering, clouds whitening, shade cloth in space, Something. I do not see we get the world to stop burning oil, without extra large scale war. To many criminals stand to loose their money.

I think the truth is somewhere in the middle. Solar is undeniably super cheap these days, and will become even cheaper. Same is for batteries. I do not know the details about the US situation, but normally solar and battery has become much cheaper than gas. But Winter storage is problematic.

Yesterday Google made it very clear it will degrade Search to use the massive amount of traffic to goes through it to push its billions of users into generative AI tools they aren’t asking for. Search is no longer a portal to the web; it’s a portal to Gemini. disconnect.blog/google-is-it...
Google made its ambitions quite obvious in its I/O announcements in 2023. On Tuesday, it laid out the next stage of its plan. The company made it clear there will be no escape from its generative AI products as AI hype continues to grip Silicon Valley, despite public sentiment very clearly turning against it and the data centers needed to power it. Search is the center of Google’s business and its power, and the company is taking a serious risk with the part of its business that drives more than half of its revenue.

While there will still be a box on google.com, it will no longer be a directory to the web. Now it will be the portal to Google’s suite of services, but especially its various generative AI tools it wants to force its users to become reliant on. In part that’s to try to win the AI war against its competitors, but it’s hard not to imagine it’s also a play to build user dependency on generative AI before it has to further jack up its prices.

Unless you have solar panels on the roof, or somewhere. They give you electricity for roughly 5 to 10 cts. So even if the purchased electricity is bit more expensive than gas would be - if you prop this up by solar, the math shifts. Sure, there is less solar in winter, but there is still some!
