The word "plagiarism" literally evokes the "kidnapping" of thoughts and ideas. It's from the Latin plagiare "to kidnap" (or plagiarius "kidnapper"), from plaga "snare, hunting net."

Animals with misleading names. I'm seeing this go around as part of a viral tumblr thread so I thought I'd reshare it.

A comic called Animals with Misleading Names. There's an electric eel labeled "not an eel". There's a mountain goat labeled "not a goat." There's a maned wolf labeled "not a wolf." There's a king cobra labeled "not a cobra. Also, snakes are typically self-governing." There's a peacock mantis shrimp labeled "Not a peacock. Not a mantis. Also, not a shrimp." There's a horny toad labeled "Not a toad. Only thinks of you as a friend." There's a mayfly labeled "active through the spring and summer." There's an eastern kingbird labeled "found in the west. Many birds do not recognize its authority."

In today’s instalment of “I won’t go to the ER unless I’m literally dying…” an Ottawa hospital is housing patients in the gymnasium due to overwhelming demand. We need masks in healthcare. We need to stop pretending COVID is over. We need to push back on anti-vaxx rhetoric This isn’t sustainable

Ottawa Hospital preparing ‘unconventional spaces’ to handle influx of patients

The Ottawa Hospital (TOH) says it is currently dealing with higher-than-normal patient volumes and is preparing some “unconventional spaces”, such as the gymnasium, to meet demand.

Your child is not sick from lack of exposure to sickness. They do not have immunity debt. Your child born after lockdowns does not have intergenerational immunity debt. The immunity debt that your child’s mother never had was not passed on to them via her mitochondria…

I don't know who needs to hear this, but you don't need to justify your reading preferences and choices to anyone. Audiobooks count as reading. Also, you don't have to finish books you don't enjoy. Don't read to impress, read for yourself. Life's too short, love yourself, ok? Signed, a librarian.

We are witnessing an exodus from the caring professions. Educators. Nurses. Mental health providers. Family physicians. Everywhere I look, I see stories of caring people who are so burned out that they can no longer continue to serve. And this breaks my heart.

“Full inclusion” is not simply dumping a highly vulnerable child with complex needs into a regular classroom with no additional staff training or supports for safety and academic success. Inclusion means hard work. Inclusion means putting our money where our mouths are.

It’s Friday. Your patience may be wearing thin. Check in with yourself. What do you need right now to help you get through this day? Extend grace to yourself. Extend grace to others. Keep going.

I've been thinking about this poem by Langston Hughes recently and although it was published in 1931, it remains relevant as ever. #books #reading #booksky #poetry

A poem by Langston Hughes titled "Tired". It reads as the following:

"I am so tired of waiting,
Aren't you,
For the world to become good
And beautiful and kind?
Let us take a knife
And cut the world in two --
And see what worms are eating
At the rind."

OTD in 1859, Charles Darwin’s Origin of Species was published. He’d been working on a long treatise titled “Natural Selection,” but learning that Alfred Russel Wallace had developed a similar theory, he shifted toward a shorter “abstract.” 1/4 🌱🐋🧪 #histSTM #evobio
