Hofstra educated #GoodLongIslandBoy. Former pop culture blogger, now I write the Workrate Hockey newsletter (go subscribe!). Youth hockey parent, DJ, and PbP guy(?). Pretend hockey lawyer. #21 in the 2000 RSPWF Top 200. Still too quiet at Canes games.

Happy banner raising day! The Workrate Hockey newsletter has risen from the dead, where we talk about Alexander Nikishin, talk people off the ledge regarding Nadeau and Under Sorum, and a Steve Austin ECW reference. Subscribe and stuff. workrate-hockey.ghost.io/workrate-hoc...

Luckily some of us write newsletters that allow us to shitpost about random other stuff for filler, like 90s Japanese professional wrestling and Suzanne Vega

Yeah but it’s not coming out until Friday, but man - are we going to have some content then!

The Wolves are lacking some bodies there in Chicago. Sardarian would put them at about 12 forwards, assuming the guys the Wolves signed that played in the ECHL aren’t really being expected to be playing anywhere but the ECHL.
010
Tom Edwards @mrworkrate.com · 17/08/2026
Well, sure. Sardarian was drafted out of Russia (not the NCAA) in 2021, so his rights don’t expire until he turns 27 (he’s currently 23). Release says he’ll report to AHL Chicago but he doesn’t currently have a contract - not that he needs an NHL one to play for the Wolves.

Addendum to today’s newsletter: Suzanne Vega’s second album actually has 2 versions of Tom’s Diner; the second is an instrumental version that sounds like the moment in a TV show or movie when a character is silently concocting a poorly thought out scheme. open.spotify.com/track/6n85rv...

I wondered why the Penguins would be giving a Victor Rask-ass contract to Ville Koivunen, but then I remembered
A clip from Google that reads:

What does Ron Francis do now?

Ron Francis serves as the Special Advisor of Hockey Operations for the Pittsburgh Penguins, assisting the front office with strategic planning and roster construction. He took this role in
June 2026 after stepping down as the President of Hockey Operations for the Seattle Kraken. ®
Current Role & Responsibilities
• Rejoined the Pittsburgh Penguins front office under President of Hockey Operations and GM Kyle Dubas.
• Provides strategic planning and expertise on roster building and internal processes.
• Consults during major events like the NHL Draft.

It’s fucking ridiculous (in a good way), and it’s actual matches instead of the good ol’ days of the Attitude Era where they’d advertise a main event that would last 3 minutes before run-ins. Plus (PLUS!) they manage to book in such a way that no real damage is done to pushes from free tv matches

That’s true. Maybe that’s why it feels weird. The draft just kind of happened. Free agency was a nothingburger. But, like, a month and a half from actual hockey?

I’m impressed you remembered that. I was warped because when we got cable I got to watch VH1 in my room but MTV was only on the one cable box in the living room. There was way too much adult contemporary in my teenage head growing up

If you think the slop I put out for my newsletter is written by AI because I use em dashes you have a very bad understanding of AI. AI wishes it could generate the segues, tangents, obscure references, & rambling that forgets the main point of the paragraph that years of mental illness have produced

It’s tough because even “official” sources can contradict themselves so you’re left going with the info you can best support if you get called out on it. And someone’s always ready to do that.
