Hofstra educated #GoodLongIslandBoy. Former pop culture blogger, now I write the Workrate Hockey newsletter (go subscribe!). Youth hockey parent, DJ, and PbP guy(?). Pretend hockey lawyer. #21 in the 2000 RSPWF Top 200. Still too quiet at Canes games.

Well, sure. Sardarian was drafted out of Russia (not the NCAA) in 2021, so his rights don’t expire until he turns 27 (he’s currently 23). Release says he’ll report to AHL Chicago but he doesn’t currently have a contract - not that he needs an NHL one to play for the Wolves.

I wondered why the Penguins would be giving a Victor Rask-ass contract to Ville Koivunen, but then I remembered
A clip from Google that reads:

What does Ron Francis do now?

Ron Francis serves as the Special Advisor of Hockey Operations for the Pittsburgh Penguins, assisting the front office with strategic planning and roster construction. He took this role in
June 2026 after stepping down as the President of Hockey Operations for the Seattle Kraken. ®
Current Role & Responsibilities
• Rejoined the Pittsburgh Penguins front office under President of Hockey Operations and GM Kyle Dubas.
• Provides strategic planning and expertise on roster building and internal processes.
• Consults during major events like the NHL Draft.

Fun fact: Seeley filing for arbitration means that the Canes will have a second 48h buyout window that begins on the third day after a player's salary arbitration case is settled or awarded. This buyout window is only for players making $4mil or more. No reason I’m sharing this. 👀

Sawchenko was signed by the Canes a few seasons ago, where he was one of the two AHL goaltenders on a Chicago Wolves team whose leading scorer was Malte Strömwall. We don’t talk about that team.

I mean, you kind of understand why Nikishin would be asking for crazy monkeyballs money if his agent is seeing that. (Contract reported by LeBrun/Dreger)
JFresh tweet with a chart and the text: Bowen Byram, extended 6x$12.5M by CHI, is an offensive defenceman with a roving, aggressive game built on carrying the puck up-ice and activating in the o-zone. Great shot and ability to create for himself, but a fair question how much he can legitimately drive play.

I love this trade because it makes absolutely no fucking sense and it’s going to drive “smart fans” absolutely nuts.

Any of those four could still re-sign with the Canes, but they can sign elsewhere as well. I love Fensore but figured his days were numbered when he had a bad game at the NHL level and Rod never trusted him again. None of these are surprising though.

Fun thing about this - of course you say this if you’re still trying to shop Kotkaniemi on the open market. Trade value turns to next to zero if teams think he’s going to be available July 1. If you say “fuck it, we’re keeping him, unless *you* want him”, value still exists, and there *is* value.

Welcome to Day 2, where the Hurricanes will: - make at least 2 more trade downs (inc. one of their 2nds) to get more picks - will use the kept 2nd to draft a non-North American player considered a “reach” - will draft a guy in the 5th everyone forgot who is somehow ranked top 25

Every hometown's got the ominous megastructure, what's yours'?
A photo of “The Big Duck”, currently in Flanders, New York. The Big Duck is a 20-foot (6.1 m) tall ferrocement building in the shape of a duck: a canonical example of novelty architecture. Built in 1931 in Riverhead, New York, United States, it was moved several times to various locations on eastern Long Island, ending up in Flanders in 2007. Well-known for its distinctive appearance, this structure inspired the word duck as a common term in academic literature used to refer to buildings shaped like everyday objects or describe excessive ornamentation used in graphical presentations of data.
