Math Pattern Gen is now listed on The Design Tools. I appreciate that their review includes the real constraints, not just the feature list. It’s a small browser tool for making adjustable static backgrounds and exporting SVG or PNG. thedesigntools.site/tools/math-p...

Math Pattern Gen
Math Pattern Gen is a free browser-based tool for creating abstract dot patterns from mathematical structures. Adjust the pattern and colors, then export SVG

Most of my little tools start with “I wish this existed” or “this is slightly annoying.” What’s a small tool you built for yourself that you still use?

A little sibling to Math Pattern Gen is taking shape. This time, I’m playing with simple shapes and the rules that arrange them—rotation, reflection, and tiling. Still a work in progress, but here’s a first peek at Pattern Theory Lab.

I hit Figma’s free MCP limit almost immediately, so I moved to a self-hosted Penpot. It’s now where Claude Code and Codex help me make slides, banners, and graphics—without extra design-tool usage limits. I wrote up the workflow and tradeoffs: mrtnusym.substack.com/p/i-hit-figm...

Six real layouts made with Math Pattern Gen. The main lesson: a pattern that looks good on its own isn’t always one that accepts type well. I wrote about crop, density, and making room for the headline. mrtnusym.substack.com/p/six-ways-i...

Six ways I used Math Pattern Gen as a background
A pattern becomes more useful when it leaves room for the thing placed on top of it.

Meet Hofun, the mascot of #PRFunho — a PR community in Japan with around 2,200 members. Its cloud-like shape represents conversations spreading gently. The eyes began as flipped P + R letterforms. I made 12 expressions too. Which one is your favorite?
Character origin sheet explaining Hofun’s cloud outline, speech-bubble form, and P plus R eyes.Horizontal and stacked #PRFunho logo lockups on white backgrounds.

I wrote a short technical note on how Math Pattern Gen actually draws patterns. The formulas don’t render lines directly. Each structure becomes { x, y, r }, then thousands of dots do the drawing. Includes a 16-second demo: mrtnusym.substack.com/p/the-dots-a...

The dots are the renderer: how Math Pattern Gen turns equations into graphics
Thirteen different mathematical structures become one visual system by passing through the same tiny interface: x, y, and radius.

I wrote about why I built Math Pattern Gen. I wanted abstract backgrounds I could adjust—not just generate once. Image generators could get close, but small changes were surprisingly hard. The story behind the tool: mrtnusym.substack.com/p/213365146

I made a small design tool I wanted for myself. Math Pattern Gen turns mathematical structures into adjustable background patterns. Choose a structure, shape it, change the colors, and export as SVG or PNG. Free, no sign-up: martin-ushiyama.github.io/math-pattern...
