First time I saw Giacometti was at the Louisiana museum in Denmark, on a trip to visit my aunt. Every time I get to see one, I go back to that.

Lol, 'work'.
a quote from an NBC News article regarding OpenAI shuttering their GenAI video creation app "Sora", which reads:

"We’re saying goodbye to Sora," the company wrote in a post on X. "We’ll share more soon, including timelines for the app and API and details on preserving your work."

I finished this!
A hand made hardwood tv console in a living room. There is a sleeping dog off to one side. A 3/4 angle of a hand made hardwood tv console in a living room. There is a sleeping dog in front of it.

This next one is skipping ahead a bit because I got stuck in the process, but hell yeah finished door and some finished and unfinished drawers!

Oh boy oh boy if you thought this was over you were incorrect. Behold: A door! I learned a lot of things hanging this door. Chief among them is that I do not love hanging doors.

Alright. Time for the full dry fit pics. I really couldn’t be happier with this. Considering I’ve never built anything like this before, things are moving along swimmingly. If a bit rhomboid.
A walnut and red oak media console sitting atop two worktables, completely free of drawers or doors. Just the body and the trim. A different angle of the same thing as the other picture in this post.

Ok fine I won’t wait. Here’s the face frame installed. Guess how much of it is perfectly square.

I didn’t take any pictures at all of how I built the face frame for this. But I did make a pretty fundamental error with them, which I’ll share next. That’s the next major milestone here. Face: framed. For now I’ll post the rest of the cabinet structure, with all its nifty but unnecessary detail.
A very rough cabinet carcass with unusually detailed framing pieces. They could have been raw plywood, but instead I thought it’d be fun to edge band every single piece with walnut and it turned out pretty. So. That’s what this is a picture of. Yet another angle on a very rough cabinet carcass with unusually detailed framing pieces. Speaking of. This size panel was new for me. I was worried. It came out prettydamn nice though. I didn’t even have to commune with festoolian gods for it. Later you will see it cut to size and installed. But not now. That would be skipping ahead.
Large panel clamps resting upon a heavily used workbench support two freshly milled planks of walnut, one of which is balanced on its edge, with a healthy smear of wood glue on the skyward side. Preparing to be joined and clamped to its more horizontal sibling. So many panel clamps are tightened around two walnut planks, with a blue strip of painters tape down the middle to catch the excess glue that squeezes out from between the boards as they are pressed together by the clamps. Clamps removed, tape cleared, and forty minutes of sanding later, the panel is ready to be cut to size and installed. The face of a craftsperson prior to forty minutes of sanding wood. They are happier now than they will be forty minutes later. But less satisfied.

Close on some of the interior structure. After these posts, the next person to see this detail will be whoever uninstalls the top panel for some future reason. Maybe they’ll be delighted by it. Maybe I’ll draw some lurid iconography, to occupy the anthropologists. You’re unlikely to find out.
A close up of one side of an in-progress furniture build. There are walnut binding accents on the plywood cross pieces, inviting one to consider “why would they do that much work for something sure to be hidden by the top panel that will inevitably be installed?”

The answer is unclear. But it does look neat.

I measured very carefully how much material I would need to compensate for on the central shelf of this carcass, given the dados it was meant to slide into. And then I removed that much from baseline instead of adding it. So this piece is 1.5” shorter than designed. Congratulations, me.
A barely completed cabinet carcass made from light birch plywood and slightly darker red oak sides. There is no form or decoration to it. Just a sketch of a piece of furniture, sitting alone in a brightly lit shop space atop a plastic cart for ease of transport.

There is a wooden box filled with tools and scrap wood resting on the shelf that spans the width of the piece.

For this one let’s see if hashtags are a thing. I am suspicious that they are to social media as crystals are to healing, but what is true of crystals if you believe in their efficacy is that they *feel* helpful regardless of what is actually going on. So. #woodworking #custom-furniture Phew.
A 3D render of a custom-designed media console that evokes the shape of an old radio console. It is a light colored wood with dark wood accents and a dark wood top. There are holes cut out of a central door which are shaped to resemble speaker grilles, and provide a clear pathway for remote control signals to pass through to the hardware stores behind them. This is my original design for this project. The finished piece will not look like this. But you will probably be able to tell how I got from this to where I’m headed.

I have a woodworking project that I will now begin to share with strangers on the internet. Here is but a teaser. An appetizer for the forthcoming incomplete recollection of the process so far, which will eventually and mercifully conclude with an inexpertly staged photograph of the finished piece.
A whole lot of rough cut lumber in the back of a sedan-sized hatchback, sticking out the end, inviting one to consider “how in the fuck are they going to get that closed?”A chunky piece of rough cut walnut is being fed through an edge jointer machine, inviting one to consider “they must have successfully transported that wood to the shop despite their vehicle ill-suited to the task”A freshly face- and edge-jointed piece of walnut being fed into a thickness planer, totally free of the spray of human blood, inviting one to conclude “they must have kept all ten of their fingers whilst face jointing and edge jointing that board”

With all our beauty and care and love and wonder, we truly could be better than this. But enough of us have had those senses poisoned that it’s more profitable for some to offer odds on the apocalypse than it is to invest in its avoidance. I have forgotten what new disappointment feels like.
A screencap of an ad for a site offering what appears to be gambling options on the length of the us government shutdown in late 2025.

I made this sandwich the day before you dropped this, and I no joke pledged my love to it. (Before devouring it whole. Because love.)

I keep telling myself he's immortal. I hope knowing it's a lie helps me appreciate the time more. He gets the hugs.
An adorable Lab/Pitt mix.
