Having grown up there I feel the opposite. Chicago’s public beaches dwarf Milwaukee’s, and you can bike for miles along Chicago’s lakefront (until Rogers Park). Lincoln Memorial Drive isn’t 8 lanes, but it serves the same purpose.

I agree with that for most of the terms. Those that are more “real” capture a significant change in the formative years. GenX grew up in the culture of the massive gen that preceded it. Millennials were the first gen to grow up online. All of them had it better than those in the COVID/Trump/AI gen.

I disagree with your characterization of what it means. It’s not just about the years. It was the post-WW2 gen that experienced the transformation of American culture in the 60s. Landon Jones' 1980 book Great Expectations: America and the Baby Boom Generation cemented the concept, not marketers

Growing up in the shadow of the Boomers, it didn’t feel like bullshit. When I read Coupland’s book it seemed like the first time someone had captured how it felt, even though he was a Boomer. In the end they’re only labels we use, and the edges are blurry.

What did you think of A World Appears? I enjoyed it (and immediately listened to it again) but was frustrated by his anthropocentrism. For example, he repeatedly posited knowledge of our mortality as a requirement of consciousness, yet children have consciousness before they learn about death.

As I thought more about the pelican I realised it illustrates the old approach, where it’s changed. Instead of make the model do a thing, it’s have the model follow the human process of making a thing. It’s not hard to get the legs right if you build a 2d jointed puppet with rotation constraints.

It’s hilarious that none of them could get the legs right! I guess I wasn’t clear about what I meant by “soft.” I meant language-based tasks dealing with humans. It’s more difficult to gauge since there’s no correct answer like the pelican.
