But quality adjustment will tell you that the price of an iPhone is down 87% because it has more ram and a faster processor

King V @mrsaver.bsky.social · 15/10/2026
Somewhat unrelated but quality adjustment on consumer devices is largely a scam. And iPhone 18 provides equivalent utility to like an iPhone 4 in 2009. And iPhone4 today is a completely worthless paperweight.

It was one time where Microsoft was actually ahead of the market. It was basically Spotify before spotify

I don’t care how good you think AI models are, taking your cobol logic and ripping it out and/or extending it to have modern APIs is not trivial. Even just the testing required is challenging, no matter how good the models are

And some of what’s holding you back is deeply embedded in the how the actual company works at a granular level.

King V @mrsaver.bsky.social · 13/10/2026
I work in banking so that’s where my mind goes to. But if you’re sitting on a cobol mainframe, and you have a lot of older tech stack holding you back, a good coding harness does not necessarily make it easy to upgrade all the components to get on par with Amex or Chase.

King V @mrsaver.bsky.social · 13/10/2026
So my take on this is that the technical moats are actually in companies whose primary business is not software or websites. Like chase has technical moat over regional banks, because the level of investment needed to catch up is high.

Same for me exactly. I use it at work, I actually use more tokens in our coding harness than anyone else in the company (working on developing agentic workflows for some common tasks)…. But god I hate hearing about AI

But I’m not as much more productive as the volume of code suggests because the AI sort of overcodes everything. Very verbose

King V @mrsaver.bsky.social · 11/10/2026
I think this is true in the sense that when like BASIC came about it did 90% of what programmers did when they were coding in assembly (or whatever). Like yeah, it’s doing a lot of my coding, but way less than 90% and mostly just the volume of code I’m producing is higher.

This doesn’t mean the more regression based nowcast models are any better. Now let’s look at the NYFed Nowcast. This DOES have error bars. But look at them! As of right now, the model says there’s a 50% probability the GDP Advance estimate between like 1.2% and 4.0%. Very fucking useful lol
000 0
King V @mrsaver.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
What are the error bars on GDPNow? *shrug* it doesn’t have any. Are we going to hit 5? No. Will it drop more? Who the F knows? it’s not actually telling you anything at all except vibes.
100 1
King V @mrsaver.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
A lot of macro nerds need to understand that all the nowcast models suck and provide like almost no value. Let’s start with GDPnoW for Q326. Look at how this has played out? What actually information has this given you? It’s been telling you Q3 would be about 5% gdp growth since July!

What I see people actually complain about is dirt bikes powered by batteries. Considering I saw some kid eat shit into back of a neighbors truck trying to do a wheel and then drive away after leaving a big ass dent, uh, I get it.
000 0
King V @mrsaver.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
From what I see in my neighborhood, the complaints are not really about “e-bikes” but “electric motorcycles” that go like 40mph, and 13 year olds are riding them on major state roads. In our local law, e-bikes are in a category where they’re only powered while pedaling. It’s assistive.

A lot of people that are voting for them want if anything, DHS and military budgets slashed not expanded. But I suspect much of the caucus will think “gee supportin’ the troops is always popular!”

Yes, I’m personally of the mind that it should not happen. Yes Trump has f’ed readiness because of Iran, but honestly, a little lack of readiness will help keep him from doing more dumb sh*t (maybe). But also I’m not confident in Democratic Party ability to read the room

I think there’s no way CIPI closes at +2% basically the times this has happened in the past 6 years are: 1) ramping back up after COVID 2) front running tariffs in Q1 2025.
