Hitting a dedicated bike lane in Tokyo brings relief & joy. Cycling in spring—free from cars & pedestrians—is truly wonderful. Bike lanes and parking networks are key for healthier cities/people. Yes, car parking is available—but at $15–$30 a day, it adds up. Free street parking is a foreign concept

That said, it’s a pretty good system. More cycling lanes are being rolled out, and owning a car is a choice, not a necessity. What makes it work—often overlooked—is bicycle parking: ~100 yen a day, holding hundreds or thousands of bikes, literally everywhere, often underground with conveyor belts.

Endless illegally parked cars do line most main roads—and smaller ones too. People ‘just ducking into shops’ or (usually guys) sitting in their cars on phones. Police rarely move them on, making things a nightmare for cyclists—especially now the new blue ticket system kicked in this week.

He grew up in an affluent suburb of York, and his parents were conservative Republicans. Fetterman has said he had a privileged upbringing. Language skills & cultural understanding are crucial for integration . Simply saying “Japan needs workers” is not good enough . France did that in the 1960s, & it has turned out very badly . There's no point in filling Japan with low-skilled workers, automation and AI are making those roles obsolete

Q: How can this go on for another 3 years? . A: Because the majority of Americans voted for it, and if history is anything to go by, they actually kind of like wars and bombing people.

Rooftop solar, home batteries, and EVs aren’t the future, they’re here now. . It’s shocking how much people spend over a lifetime on petrol and power. . The average driver works ~2.1 years of a 40-year career just to pay for petrol. . And spends ~2.2 years of their life sitting in the car commuting.

I don’t understand why they don’t want drunk Aussies partying all night and throwing rubbish everywhere because they can’t find a bin… or Chinese tourists rolling huge, noisy suitcases over cobbled streets at all hours. I mean — the rest of the world is already forced to deal with Airbnb fascists.

The slow uptake of solar and EVs in Japan isn’t helping . That said, I’m starting to see more houses with rooftop solar . There’s a solid range of government subsidies pushing households toward renewables . Unfortunately, awareness is still low — and many simply don’t care . But it’s slowly changing

Just don’t understand why NZ/Kiwis have been so slow to adopt rooftop solar. . Australians, who are not the sharpest tools in the shed, have rooftop solar on literally two out of three houses, and batteries are being installed at an exponential rate.

2x ICE cars cost us $100 pw to run. $10K+ pa . Gas+ grid power was $400pm. $5K+ pa . $15K per year over the next 30 years was $450K . Rooftop solar, battery+ 2x EVs = $150 pm . Projected cost over 30 years $1800 pa / $54K total . Cars do combined 650kms+ pw . Setup cost under $100K saving $300K+

Toyota seems determined to outdo itself with increasingly stupid decisions. . Meanwhile, BYD is launching an EV kei car in Japan. . I’m sure the Toyota “Cybertruck” will sell by the dozens in Japan. . One day Akio Toyoda will wake up and realise that, like Musk, he chose the wrong path.

Firstly, the Sinners script is pretty average. Sure, I get the whole “metaphor for racism in the Deep South” angle, but it still feels like a ham-fisted, by-the-numbers Hollywood script. . Secondly, it’s the Oscars — a ceremony Americans assume the whole world is watching. But hellooo…

On a recent visit the NZ I was surprised / shocked that very few houses had roof top solar. . Costs $150 per month to run a 5 bedroom house with air con and charge 2 x EVs that do a combined 1500km+ per month in Sydney with roof top solar. . Sure get the weather differences, but still.
