The Atari 800XL mini better support multi-disk games so people don't miss out on ALTERNATE REALITY: THE CITY, a 1985 RPG with a 5-minute intro sequence (!) which includes the first videogame song with lyrics (!!!). It rules. Full intro here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=FZmr...

I'm lucky I can do that without my ISP sending me scary letters but I hear that's not the case everywhere. Plus I kinda think torrenting a show still helps build buzz and make people go "oh [whatever]+ has good shows, maybe I'll start paying for it"

My knee-jerk reaction was "this isn't my first computer, my first computer was an Atari 800XL" and then I scrolled down. I wonder how they'll handle Elektraglide, which runs so fast on NTSC it's unbeatable. Here's my attempt to get as far as possible on my childhood 800XL (just bc the music rules)

Anything made with algorithms trained on the stolen work of independent creators, paying the fucking thieves instead of the creators, is tainted and contributes to making the world a worse place. "But we can't do [cool thing] without stealing!" Then we can't do it. We're not entitled to cool things.

A positive side effect of genAI: I used to spend way too much time looking through every single retro game hack and homebrew, but now that there's 20x more and each one requires 5 minutes of detective work to find out if the author gives a shit about not plagiarizing others, the compulsion is cured!

deadline,” the report reads. “There are early signals, however, that overreliance on chatbots can have a range of significant negative consequences — diminishing critical thinking, weakening memory, eroding confidence, and undermining mastery.”

It’s a thorny subject as administrators continue to push for more AI adoption, not less. That’s despite countless educators, who’ve watched helplessly as their AI-dependent students struggle in the classroom, are bristling at the thought.

“I think you have to lean in, but you have to do so in a way that’s thoughtful and ethical and asks the right questions,” University of Hawaii president Wendy Hensel told the New York Times. “The right answer to AI is not just ‘no.’ It can’t be. It has to be approached with curiosity and understanding of the implications.”

I bought Mario
Small MarioWas browsing a Japanese auction site at 4am, as one must, when I found a listing titled Mario. Just Mario, no other details, with the exact image above. It was listed for 11 yen, which converts to a little over 7 cents, so I pressed the buy button just to be able to say "I bought Mario". Unfortunately none of the confirmation messages included any words to that effect, so I wasn't able to take a screenshot to impress my friends and family and forgot about the whole thing. Two and a half weeks later, it was here. Mario. Not Mario himself, but the concept of Mario. It looked like the image above, always the same from every angle, hovering above this plane of reality like a transparent PNG. Any attempt to photograph it with a digital camera would cause it to emit a high-pitched squeal that disrupted the functioning of the device and my bowels, no doubt an advanced form of DRM. I panicked, not prepared for the responsibility of being the sole owner of Mario. I ran to my room, locked the door, and initiated return proceedings at the auction site, only to learn that the fees and shipping costs meant I wouldn't be getting my 7 cents back. As a matter of principle, I decided to keep Mario. When I opened the door, it was hovering in front of it. I gently guided it to my closet and left it between the boxes for my Nintendo Labo kits, various Rock Band 3 instruments, and the Garfield I bought on eBay in 2015. Sometimes, if I point my phone in the wrong direction, I hear them squealing together and need new pants.

Catapult had big plans for the PC version of XBAND (tourneys! spectate mode! console cross-play!) but it seems to have fizzled out pretty quickly. The program is on archive.org but I don't think you can do anything with it today. Also, I heard they paid one of the models on these mockups with woims.

Catapult Into PC Games

Dying for a Deathmatch? Wait no longer. Catapult Entertainment has unveiled a prerelease version of XBAND
PC, a new nationwide Windows 95 PC gaming network featuring top hits like Doom II, Descent, Heretic,
MechWarrior 2, HardBall 5, Super Street Fighter II, and Indy Car Racing.

Based on Catapult's online gaming network for Sega and Nin-
tendo systems, XBAND PC offers direct modem-to-modem connec-
tions between players' computers. Instead of playing from a central
gaming server with hordes of other people, you use Catapult's spe-
cial software to directly link with your opponent. According to
Catapult, this approach reduces delays during fast-paced action
games. Right now, gamers are limited to one-on-one contests, but
you'll be able to play up to five opponents at a time this summer.

Subscription fees are waived during the beta period, and long-
distance play costs $3.95 an hour. Upon full launch in March,
XBAND will charge monthly subscription
fees consistent with the other services' pric-
ing. Download the Windows 95 beta soft-
ware from Catapult's Web site at http://

XBand PC player bios give you a feel for your opponents. The Saturn and other console versions will support a similar player-bio section. Console and PC players will be able to compete if developers include support in their appsSource: Internal Catapult email. (09/27/1995)
