White Pine County, Nevada. 2022 Wander freely and explore spaces larger than many countries. Deserts, forests, mountains, meadows, lakes, and rivers loaded with ancient and modern history. Priceless falls short. Your land, my land. Protect it.
A wooden signpost stands in a desert landscape under a clear blue sky. The top sign reads left toward Antelope Range and right toward Rock Spring. Below it, a second sign points right for the Pony Express Trail (1860–1861), the historic route of the legendary mail service that connected Missouri and California. A dirt road stretches toward distant mountains, surrounded by low, red brush.

So what’s causing the other >90%? Other factors like street lighting. Even if vehicle sizes had never grown there still would have been an unprecedented growth in pedestrian fatalities.

Mike Levine @mrlevine.bsky.social · 22/06/2026
Here’s what the NYT says about pedestrian fatalities and vehicle size: “Our estimate is that about 200 to 400 pedestrians a year would not have died if vehicles had remained approximately the same size over the past quarter-century…about *10 percent* of the recent increase in pedestrian deaths.”

The GHSA research shows the massive migration to sunbelt states from 2011-2020 is exactly what drove this spike that didn’t happen in other countries. Rapidly expanding metros that have lacked pedestrian-friendly infrastructure.
