"Since both permanent war and heroism are difficult games to play, the Ur-Fascist transfers his will to power to sexual matters. This is the origin of "machismo" (which implies both disdain for women and intolerance and condemnation of nonstandard sexual habits)." - Umberto Eco, "Ur-Fascism"

The modern Conservative base only cares about housing scarcity as a Trojan Horse for smuggling anti-immigrant bigotry into the discourse. They long for deportations, not duplexes.

Conservatives hate solutions, even *conservative* solutions lmao, because if anything ever got better, they wouldn't be able to campaign on grievance.

$2B heat pump rebate program unveiled by federal government — CTV News
Prime Minister Mark Carney announced Thursday that his government is investing $2 billion into a new national heat pump rebate program, with the goal of incentivizing Canadians to retrofit more energy...

A Heat Pump Strategy is particularly welcome news considering how the Climate Institute just reported that Canadian emission increases are currently being driven more by building heating demands than oil and gas, which has actually seen a decrease in emissions despite increasing production.

Carney’s presentation in Quebec today is all about space heating. 🥳 “Heating a home with oil costs 70% more than it did two years ago. Now there’s another 6 million who heat with electric baseboards and furnaces who are still paying 45% more than they have to.”

Remember, these are the same people who deride scientific experts as "out of touch elites". So genetic elitism is great, but professional elitism, not so much. We call this "Meritocracy".

“Why should I give up my comfortable natural gas furnace when someone else can cut their emissions instead?” “Why should I give up my hard earned money? Tax someone else instead.” “I’m uncomfortable with my gov’t having armed forces. Someone else should bear that moral weight instead.”

I think this generalizes to the “low energy state” approach to a lot of political problems - the easiest thing to do is always to say “someone else should bear the cost”, be that pollution, the inconvenience of construction, or even just change.

Where I've landed with this is that municipalities (and neighbourhoods within them) are all basically trying make new housing go Somewhere Else. It's a collective action problem where everyone in the province benefits from abundant housing, but no one wants change locally. So we get *gestures*

If you think that staying on X is somehow a brave, rearguard action to fight the nazis on their own turf, think again. You are way more likely to simply absorb far-right bigotry and derangement and incorporate it into your own priors, even as someone who proports to be a Leftist.

"Canada's oil and gas sector accounted for a lower level of emissions in 2025, despite boosts in production, while the country's overall emissions ticked up thanks to increased reliance on natural gas to heat homes." Another data-point for the critical importance of domestic electrification.

I feel like modern tankies don't really have an expanding communist empire like the soviet camp to stan for, so they end up stanning for russian fascism out of pure muscle memory.
