I went pretty long on Queen At Sea because dementia is such a tricky, troubling thing to tackle on screen - and I just haven't stopped thinking about this film since seeing it. It's an upsetting, tender, brilliant piece of work (the film, not my review, although, hey, that's not for me to say).

The new issue of Empire is on sale tomorrow. I interviewed Miriam Margolyes for our esteemed 'How Much Is A Pint Of Milk?' questionnaire. I think the word 'riotous' is overused in journalism but, well. Just including our opening exchange here. The rest is just as fruity.

I must say I loved doing this interview with Willem. A great hour a couple of years ago. Nosferatu, the occult, living in a fisherman's cottage, Antichrist, mummified heads, outsiders, Wild At Heart, death... an epic natter.

In 2024 I interviewed Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas, on the phone, about their career. They wouldn't discuss what film was next, but at one point I asked this question about Trojan-horsing ideas. We discovered recently that they exchanged amused looks about that. Anyway: this is a fun answer.

Stop-motion cardboard cut-out Sabotage. How great it is to live in a world where someone spends five years making this just for kicks. This made me smile so much.

Eddington is one of the most underrated and underseen films of the 21st century... a really funny and unnerving portrait of the absolute state of things. Should have won a whole bunch of Oscars but people just don't know what's good for them.

Extremely fun - and stimulating (not like that - well, a bit like that, here and there) movie. A love letter not just to a cinema, but a scene, a movement - and also to a London that doesn't quite exist anymore. Viva Scala.

Of all the social platforms, Facebook is the one that has become the most baffling, a swamp of AI-written, AI-illustrated nonsense, an endless load of lawless horseshit that nobody asked for. This, which was spewed into my phone yesterday, is particularly awful. Look at the state of it.

Tony Stella was one of the most incredible artists I've ever worked with, and an even better human, full of integrity & passion & life, and it's impossible to process the news that he's gone. It was truly an honor to work with him, every time, and my heart goes out to all his family and friends.

Tony Stella was the best. I could barely believe we got him to make art for us at Empire. Here are some of the feature openers he did for us, and a cover. It was a thrill to receive these masterpieces (all magnificently hand-painted), and a joy to see his work on our pages. He was untouchable. RIP.

I went to see Interstellar at the Royal Albert Hall last weekend, with a live score by the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra and the original soundtrack organist Roger Sayer. It was a profoundly emotional experience, which I've written about here.

Christopher Nolan's sci-fi masterpiece is even more emotional with the power of live music – and a 70ft organ, writes Empire's Alex Godfrey.

A very good thread about journalists and AI, much of which also applies to writers of nonfiction books. We are being told, with increasing frequency and stridency, that we "just don't get" how AI can help us, by people who are manifestly not interested in helping us. Know your enemy. Hold the line.

Catherine O'Hara was amazing forever, but even in the last couple of years alone it seemed she was having the time of her life, scene-stealing like there was no tomorrow. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, The Last Of Us, The Studio... she just WENT for it, every time. A gigantic force.

10 years ago I interviewed Dexter Fletcher. I asked him about Alan Rickman, who'd been a proper guardian angel to him, saving his career and possibly his life. I've stuck a bit here, but there's much more on, erm, Tumblr - it's a sweet read about a beautiful man. mrgodfrey.tumblr.com/post/1420114...
