I've averaged 9 meets per day this week. I've seen my parents 4 times in the last ten years. At the current rate I will have around 51,000 more meetings before state retirement age and I'll see my parents 3 more times before they die. HOPE YOU'RE HAVING A GOOD WEEK.

I had the joy of hearing two old white women in the supermarket this morning moaning about how they are "in the minority round here now". They are part of the NINETY FIVE FUCKING PERCENT of the local population who are White British. So that was a good start to the DAY.

Hey guys has anyone heard of Anthony Bourdain??? There's a real lack of fawning, paint-by-numbers, performatively sincere content online about what a great guy he was despite his flaws and how his TV shows speak specifically to that one persons totally unique view of the world.

My version of fiddling whilst the world burns is adding silly things to my already silly website, and I think on balance that's probably better than watching the news.

In the end, I found out more about him than the museum knew, and have been able to share my research with them to add to their own records, so that's pretty cool.

I had emailed the curator at the museum for any info they had a qhile back, but they knew next to nothing about the guy, nor how he came to have and donate such an array of things at a time when the British were up to seriously dark shit in Africa.

The Colonial official story was a massive rabbit hole in it's own right. This chap was born in St Kitts, ended up working in Lagos as a tax auditor, and came into possession of 50 or so objects from Benin & Nigeria which ended up in the Exeter Museum when his wife died a couple of decades after him.

Because I don't want to be killed in my sleep I figured it best not to publish the thing, but if you want a look you can DM me for the password and then go to mrfrisby.com/house

Oakley — a history of the house
A documentary history of Oakley, once called Knowles Hill after the hill it stands on, a Victorian villa in Newton Abbot — traced through deeds, censuses, estate maps and newspaper archives.

I've tried to make the page feel like a history unfolding, and to make the research and the varying levels of certainty I have in my findings a part of the thing itself.

Obviously I've been enjoying designing the thing as much as researching it - the inspiration was the 1889 Ordinance Survey map where the house and neighbourhood were captured in amazing detail.

Stuart Frisby @mrfrisby.com · 15/09/2026
I've tried to find out about every family that's passed through the house since 1878, at least 13 households. Amongst them and their stories are a colonial official's questionable collection of African artefacts, a Labour councillor's doomed run at Parliament, and a member of the West York Militia.

I've spent the last month working on a side-project: a documentary history of my house - deeds, censuses, estate maps, newspaper archives. Real archive work too, days in local libraries and record offices, not just a laptop and 400 browser tabs. What a massive nerd. #devon
The 1889 Ordinance Survey Map of the neighbourhoodA timeline of the various occupants of the house, starting with the farmer who grazed his cattle on land owned by the Duke of Somerset in the mid-1800s. Fun with type and layout - The page is super text heavy, as you might expect, so I've tried to break it up with varied layout and rhythm to make it a bit less of a slog. The essay itself is really just the tip of the iceberg. I still have lots of evidence to gather and add, and a bunch of side quests to go on.

Wonder if they’ll do holograms for the dead ones like that ABBA show but with Rolf Harris and Jimmy Saville instead of holographic Benny and Björn.

Love the pre-match coverage of the Cov game being mostly a conversation about Manchester United and then a former Manchester City player being interviewed at some car thing. #PUSB

But there’s no denying there are plus sides to being in a place where stuff happens and where there are nice lunches to be had and interesting people to be around.

I don’t regret choosing to work remotely - when I worked in London I *hated* donating time to my employer so I could commute back and forth in a plague-ridden tunnel to an office which had its lighting designed by a sociopath and where the coffee tasted like the bottom of a wheelie bin smells.

And like, obviously the real solution is retiring and never having to tell people they’re on mute ever again as long as I live but I have an expensive lifestyle/family to maintain and hopefully at least several more years in which it needs sustaining, and so maybe retiring at 41 isn’t the way to go.

But then that feels incredibly profligate given that I have a perfectly good home office without the need to rent a commercial property somewhere else.

I think what I really want it to be in a little office in a city where I can pop out for coffee and lunch and do fun stuff after work, but where I can still dial in to my sad little zoom calls all day without being an irritant to anyone but myself.

Hate the idea of being a nuisance. Most coworking spaces have phone booths you can use but if I’m going to spend 75% of my day in a sweaty box I might as well just stay at home.

I’m forever looking for a good coworking space and today I went to a private members library which was glorious and beautiful but I think I’m coming to realise that my job is just not particularly compatible to working in a shared space - I spend a lot of my days on conference calls and I…

Spent some time on the weekend getting my home office sorted and made space for my pride and joy, my Braun SK5 phonosuper record player and radio. I hope I’m in as good a condition as this is when I am 68 years old.

Kittens! This is Mog and Boots (named after Mogadishu and Djibouti) after Antananarivo died earlier this year it was time for some new furry pals. My son is in charge of naming and obviously has a thing for African cities. They’re so small 😱
