Btw it gets even more confusing when we add the layer of between- vs. within-subject errorbars. Here is an experimental plot I did for my dissertation, visualizing between-errors on points and within-errors on lines. The underlying R code is a mess 🥲

Mario Reutter-Dieker @mreutter.bsky.social · 03/08/2026
Interesting point! I agree that the confidence bands don't contribute anything useful here but it is because errors are mostly uniform both within and between categories. The overall insight of homoscedasticitiy in this data, however, is extremely useful (but could be communicated more efficiently)

This is not limited to errors but also relevant for central tendency: If you plot median and inter-quartile range but do a parametric test where M and SE-based CI are of essence, things don't match. Of course, Md and IQR are relevant for statistical assumptions but show them additionally to M and SE

Thank you! Very thought-provoking post! My humble take is that your plot should always represent your statistical analysis. Using frequentist statistics? Plot the 95% CI (or whatever represents your alpha-level and one- vs. two-sidedness)! Bayesian statistics? Credibility interval it is!

I totally agree that virtually all of us can do better in communicating the meaning of our results! On the flipside, what are your thoughts on oversimplification - as can often be seen when the media are communicating scientific results?

Absolutely great idea! I also like the design choice of making it its own function that aligns with natural language instead of just adding a parameter to the filter function, which would more likely be missed by users.

Thanks a lot for making me aware! What a timing :)
000
Mario Reutter-Dieker @mreutter.bsky.social · 17/11/2025
I guess it would be nice to have a function "filter_out" that only DROPS values that evaluate to TRUE in its argument, keeping NAs in the data.frame. The alternative, as always, is that you handle NAs explicitly in your function but it's just easy to forget them :)
110
Mario Reutter-Dieker @mreutter.bsky.social · 17/11/2025
I cannot state this enough: The filter function cannot know if the logical values it received stem from a comparison of equvialence (e.g., x == 1) or of inequivalence (e.g., x != 2). It just receives a vector of logical values (including NAs). Therefore, it only makes sense to drop NA values.
000
Mario Reutter-Dieker @mreutter.bsky.social · 17/11/2025
Surprisingly, both 2 and NA get dropped, leaving only a tibble with the first entry of x == 1. The reason behind this is that NA != 2 gets evaluated as NA and not as TRUE and NAs are dropped in filter (which makes sense).

Mario Reutter-Dieker @mreutter.bsky.social · 17/11/2025
What do you think will be the result of the following line of R code? tibble(x = c(1, 2, NA)) %>% filter(x != 2) I was rather surprised to find out :). The answer is in the comments. #rstats

Trump’s anti-trans Executive Order is bad BUT it technically defines everyone as female. It states: “'Female' means a person belonging, at conception, to the sex that produces the large reproductive cell." Since all fetuses "at conception" are female, Trump just defined EVERYONE as female.

We replicated an attentional bias towards eyes compared to mouth and nose but individuals were able to adjust towards diagnostic facial features. Interestingly, people with high anxiety looked to non-diagnostic regions more quickly (hyperscanning?).

Participants acquired fear quickly and generalized it to morphs of faces (osf.io/wgqnj/wiki/h...) in a curved fashion✅. Highly anxious individuals showed overall higher subjective threat ratings✅ but no difference in generalization patterns compared to lowly anxious ones❌.

I thought not centering continuous predictors completely changes what interactions mean. Imagine the interaction of two non-negative predictors. Without centering: low * low = very low; with centering: negative * negative = positive. I think the latter is preferable since it mirrors effect coding.
000
Mario Reutter-Dieker @mreutter.bsky.social · 22/03/2024
I think z-scoring is a dominant strategy for statistical testing (interpretability of slopes due to standardization + interpretability of interactions due to centering). The problem is specific to visualization since practical information of mean and standard deviation are lost. Would you agree?
