I went to my doc for a panic disorder and he told me to buy this book on meditation. I got the book, started reading it, and got a panic attack.

There was also a 20/20 segment about modern exorcisms that had me staring at the ceiling all night. Maybe about 10 years later, I found that segment on a VHS tape at a friend’s house. Freaked me out all over again—this time, because it was much clearer that it was about abusing schizophrenics.

Probably not the absolute first, but the one that comes to mind: a History Channel documentary my dad fell asleep to about executions that had gone wrong. In particular, a story about an electric chair execution in Florida in the 80s that lit a man on fire.

At this point, I will be long dead before the shushing stereotype dies out. When I was in library school 20 years ago, that was already not a thing.

No lie, that movie has one of the best DVD commentary tracks I’ve ever heard. It’s two hours of Caine holding court, talking about RVing across Europe with Roger Moore.

One thing I’d like to know: who exactly are the consultants? I hear “consultant class” constantly and I think that collective noun provides a lot of cover for them to keep operating. They should be named.

Not limited to Meta at all. Very common across tech in general. Musk constantly lies about features that never materialize and deadlines that come and go. It’s part of the whole stock manipulation thing they do that’s core to their business.

People don’t understand how close to a New World Pictures movie this actually is.

MrDys @mrdys.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
This is the first time I've really watched it in full as an adult. At the risk of angering the entire internet, this is a silly-ass movie. Having had more Roger Corman/Charles Band/etc viewings under my belt since the last time I watched it, you cannot tell me that Star Wars is light years ahead of what they're doing. The script baaarely hangs together. A shit ton of named characters are introduced in the third act only to have them exploded 3 minutes later. The characters, broadly, are cardboard cutouts. Carrie Fisher has an accent that wanders off a cliff at some point in the second act.

This movie has three saving graces: production design, miniature FX work, and Harrison Ford. The first two are well documented and kind of a given, but I was surprised in how much Harrison Ford really saves this movie. He oozes charisma in such a way that you really just want it to be his movie.

A lot of the silliness is addressed in sequels, prequels, and followups-mostly by taking the material dead seriously-to varying degrees of success.

Look, I love schlocky shit, but given the everything surrounding this movie, I'm not quite sure how much of its fandom (casual or otherwise) understands how close to New World Pictures this movie actually is.

I shared this image four years ago, two months before ChatGPT was released. It’s from The Actual Star by Monica Byrne, published five years ago this week. Given everything that’s happened in the last five years and current discussions today, I’d say it a bullseye.
I want to draw especial attention to the treatment of Al
-artificial intelligence-in these narratives. Think of Ex Machina or Blade Runner. I spoke at TED two years in a row, and one year, there were back-to-back talks about whether or not Al was going to evolve out of control and "kill us all." I realized that that scenario is just something I have never been afraid of. And at the same moment, I noticed that the people who are terrified of machine super-intelligence are almost exclusively white men. I don't think anxiety about Al is really about Al at all. I think it's certain white men's displaced anxiety upon realizing that women and people of color have, and have always had, sentience, and are beginning to act on it on scales that they're unprepared for. There's a reason that Al is almost exclusively gendered as female, in fiction and in life.
There's a reason they're almost exclusively in service positions, in fiction and in life. I'm not worried about how we're going to treat Al some distant day, I'm worried about how we treat other humans, now, today, all over the world, far worse than anything that's depicted in Al movies. It matters that still, the vast majority of science fiction narratives that appear in popular culture are imagined by, written by, directed by, and funded by white men who interpret the crumbling of their world as the crumbling of the world.

I have no idea why I’m responding to this because you clearly have a side you’re on, but: using AI to handle the dumb admin shit of being an artist is useful. I have something that’s constantly looking for new shows/grants/residencies for me to apply to based on the type of work I do.

You eschew any use of the actual tools, ignore all academic research, refuse to read anything about neuroscience of mind or its connections to the long, storied history of AI research, don’t understand what a transformer model is, and expect to somehow have a good take on AI? Get real.

As a leftist who has both 1) read a lot of philosophy of mind stuff and 2) personally done deep academic research in machine learning I promise you that your reductive takes on AI having no chance at “real” intelligence or even sentience in the near future (decade or so) are flat out uninformed.

“I have complaints about implications for labor and capital therefore I chose to completely reject an entire field of applied science as invalid under my worldview” is so tedious and it makes people who are experts and otherwise might agree with your concerns gag and withdraw. What’s the point?

Like, being a cookie cutter leftist rejecting the significance of AI systems wholesale in 2026 means just freezing your understanding of technology five years in the past and frankly it’s a really dumb look. I don’t care how cool it sounds at punk shows and parties. It’s anti-intellectual and wrong.

You don’t have to buy industry hype about AI to take like a few weeks to read some papers and realize that in terms of algorithms and the 70 year program of research in artificial intelligence we are on the cusp of something truly transformative for computing and society. Think for yourself.
