Churchill didn’t get reelected after WWII either. Wartime leadership has very different requirements than peacetime and requires you to have the courage to make tough choices. Voters may assume they can’t switch to a peacetime role and don’t know what that would look like.

In most countries most seed comes from the previous crop. In most countries there is a combination of subsistence and commercial farming. When fields are “contaminated” with GMO, the commercial farmers cannot sell it without paying the patent holder and subsistence farmers must eat it. Clear?

Farmers in which countries? In first world countries you may be right, but not in the poorest countries. Farmers can’t afford buying new seed each year. If Monsanto is sanitizing the neighboring farms, that would be a recent development resulting from the bad publicity. I doubt its universal.

The modified corn is not the problem. The fact that patent law gives ownership of the seed to the patent holder instead of the farmer is the problem. This makes the farmer eternally indebted to companies like Monsanto. Even neighboring farms contaminated by the patented seeds are liable.

In some fields I have some experience and expertise so I listen to their explanations and look at their experience and see if it’s consistent. If it isn’t they need some strong evidence because I suspect they aren’t genuine. Obvious mistakes blow their credibility.

Especially in social sciences many studies don’t have a large enough sample or rigorous controls to warrant drawing any conclusions. I look for explanations of the mechanics of how things work that support a position. The mechanics should be empirically obvious or proven in testing.

First you have to vet the “experts”. Many people are presented as or present themselves as experts. A number of them are not. Others have the right background but have financial interests in steering you in the wrong direction. I look at the “studies” they cite and what other “experts” say.

/2 nor does Capitalism require 100% private ownership. Common infrastructure has always been primarily publicly owned or controlled. Roads, electrical distribution, telecommunications, education have been owned or controlled (regulated monopoly) for most of existence.

It’s about spreading ownership not concentrating it. The fact we have a concentration of wealth means we aren’t managing Capitalism correctly. As Capitalism is defined, the government’s role is to prevent such concentrations. Read Adam Smith.

Capitalism is neither left or right wing. The government can be left, right, or in between. It requires less government control than Socialism so it potentially supports greater individual freedom.
