So Trump implemented tariffs against Mexico, Canada, and China. Then he had a 'very nice conversation' with the President of Mexico, and has paused the tariffs for 30 days because... Trump is so transparent. If you give him attention and 'respect', he caves. Why we should be afraid of Putin?

I'm trying my hardest to ignore the daily noise out of DC. My theory is, if you respond to everything, you are being vaccinated against constitutional transgressions and eventually you will have to ignore the 'small' ones. It's called flooding the zone. But even the bits I do get are cray-cray.

I wonder how long things will go before people start collecting pitchforks and torches?

On my way from Western NC to Orlando. Sure we had snow in the mountains, but this was along I26 and we continued to see snow as far south as Savanah. Weird.

I'm a software developer in a support engineer's clothing. I am working on tools to automate support. A support engineer shared samples of certain types of logs. There are two specific formats for these logs (which I am parsing). Until there was a third.. and the idea that there might be more..

The more I hear about Carrie Underwood, the less I like her. Wonder if Spotify allows for blocking artists?

Hiding up in my fortress of solitude, wrapped in a blanket of fresh snow, and ignoring the early fits of the Dictator in Chief. Also ignoring the punditry screaming about Trump's first day. Truthfully, giving Trump attention is what keeps him going. Like a childish tantrum.

Doing the final packing for a work-play week up in the mountains of North Carolina. This has the advantage of being a 'purple' area (better than red Florida), and far from the news and events of the day (especially Jan 20th). So I can live out my week and completely miss the inauguration BS.

I’m a cat person. Why do people carry bags for their dog poop, pick it up, then leave it on side of trail or next to where they parked their car?

Strange morning. Some a**hat put my information into moving.com for a fictitious move to another state. This automatically notified a dozen or more moving providers to submit bids and contact me. I have received multiple email bids, and voice mail messages already. What's the point?

After the election, I purposefully distanced myself from my sources of news. Mostly it was because I drank the liberal koolaid and Harris lost bigly. I don't want to go through four more years of anger and opposition. It's not healthy. But it's hard to ignore the abject stupidity of him.

Running my regular 5.5 mile route this cool morning. To avoid boredom or focusing on my aching legs, I started looking at roadside trash. Single use bags, soda and beer cans, Big Gulp cups, lids, and straws, random clothing. There was a time when Americans took pride in the environment.

I took a week off from running to help my daughter prepare her house for sale. Ran a six mile route this morning in 40F and it … was… terrible..

Happy new years from the land of Ron DeSantis. Enjoying our fire pit with the staccato rattle and boom of fireworks. My cat doesn’t care, but I know a lot of dog owners who are less than thrilled about the ‘celebration’

For reasons I can’t recall, I watched the remake of the movie ‘Midway’ on Netflix tonight. The real story of Midway is one of the greatest victories in American history. The movie was crap. All CGI, a potentially great cast, awful script, and gamification of action. Just awful.

I have seen an uptick in people following me. It's not like I have 100K (I don't!) but when people follow me, I try to check on them. A lot of them have a few thousand followers, or are following hundreds or thousands, and they have only a few posts. That is a red flag to me.

While we were in AZ last March, we stopped at the Big Meteor Crater. Whoa. The left image shows the entire crater from the observation deck. The right image is zoomed in on the small mine complex at the bottom. There is a dummy in a space suit for scale.

Hiking in the Painted Desert near Petrified Forest National Park. One of the interesting things about these ridges is that they are basically soft dirt. They crumble if you touch them. Thankfully they are protected from dumbass 4x4 owners.

As a side gig, I am developing automated tools to help support engineers solve customer issues. The environment that we deploy to has Python 3.6, with minimal third party libraries. Over the past month, I have had to build an HTML parser basically from scratch. This morning, all my tests worked!

This picture showed up on my phone today as one of those random memories. I took this on the side of the road on a February day. No idea what these trees are, but they were everywhere in ‘bloom’. According to the metadata, Columbus, North Carolina. South of Rutherfordton.

We’re not in Kansas anymore. Day hike to Superstition Mountain, Lost Dutchman State Park, Pheonix, AZ. The problem with day hikes is they are just not enough.. not far enough, not to the top, the bottom.. something is left undiscovered or unrevealed.

Hiking the Dingle Way last summer. The thing I love about Europe is that you can find these old houses or barns randomly. No story or explanation. This place is clearly older than my Country (US). I always wonder who, when?

My extended family has a cold/flu feedback loop going. It seems like one of us gets sick, then another, then another, and before you know it the first person is sick again. I completed a round of steroids and antibiotics for an upper respiratory. But a new bug is stalking the house.

On my way home when I spotted a ‘homeless’ guy panhandling at an intersection. I never carry cash. But I have to give him credit.. he found a way to really open up the donation pool. All he needs now is a go fund me. Feel free to reward his effort.

The Assad regime in Syria has collapsed. Assad has fled (probably to Iran). Syrian troops abandoned their posts and gear without a fight. That is what a third rate army looks like.

My cat has places throughout my house and yard that he goes at different times of the day. For much of the daylight hours, he posts up on the back of the living room couch to enjoy his ‘cat tv’ through the bay window. Watching neighbors cats come and go.

I can't say it doesn't bother me that Musk spent over a quarter billion dollars in various PAC and other contributions to get Trump elected. What really bothers me is that Musk (and other 1% Oligarchs) have that much money that they can just dump millions on elections, super cars, yachts, and homes

Last January, I hiked the Salkantay Trail to Machu Pichu. The guides, accommodations, and food were amazing. Along the way, we overnighted below Humantay Glacier (this is lake below glacier). When you think of Machu Pichu, you don’t think of Humantay. Maybe that is backward?

I have a weekly routine where I take my EV to a local community college for a free charge and run or bike home. When I bike, I take a scenic circuitous route of 30-35 miles so I get some exercise. Today was a bike day so I loaded my gear.. and forgot my bike shoes. Riding in Crocks.. SML

Hiked the West Highland Way with the wife a few years back in a quaint time before COVID. It was her first longish hike at about 100 miles. It also demonstrated to me how tough the Scottish highlanders are. This was in May and there is snow on the mountains.

Mont Saint Michel, France from the flood plains near sunset. In photography, I have found that I prefer the ‘when’ and ‘where’ over the ‘how’. The iPhone is perfect for that. Spontaneity.
