Today Indigenous Education meant so much more. For years I wanted to offer a traditional smudge Monday mornings & call it S’Mondays, where anyone is welcome to start the week in a good way in community. Today was the first S’Monday ever. Worried nobody would come, I lost count after 50. So thankful.

Today Indigenous Education was next level. I was invited into a grade 2 class to share medicine & smudge teachings, in question time a little hand went up &, having seen my drum, a student asked if I would sing with them. So the teaching became the Bear Song & we all sang together. Deeply thankful.

My teenage nostalgia self & my current teacher self had the most fun this morning when I challenged students to be gumshoes & engage their geography skills by tracking Carmen Sandiego & her crew around the world. All while the Rockapella theme song I grew up with played on loop. Best.

Today Indigenous Education sounded like the first steps towards connecting students to the music of the land, the heartbeat rhythm that guides us all. We treated & cut buffalo & deer hide to prepare them for upcoming drum making teachings, that students will use to find their own rhythm.

This afternoon, Indigenous Education really hit home for a Métis man like me, as we explored Riel House. The home of Louis Riel’s family, where his funeral was held & his body was hidden, where students toured, made bannock & butter, & I got to teach them the Métis art of traditional finger weaving.
