A very short and simple sliding puzzle game by HAL Labs. The little jingle it has is pretty catchy.

Just want to clarify that this is actually a bad example. This example is more about artifact colors, which is related, but not the same thing as CRT blending.

When people talk about old games, I don't buy the idea that the graphics were always made with CRT blending in mind, because high-quality video output existed even in the 80s. However, in cases like Back to the Future for the PC-88, it's super obvious that this is the case:

Here's my current high scores for the PC-88 version of Back to the Future, a game that was just recently dumped. It's exactly the same game as the MSX original, but with added Low difficulty, which is only slightly easier.

Believe it or not, but there used to be an undumped, officially licensed Back to the Future game out there... but no more!!

Not sure why I did this, but I ripped the graphics from all three versions of Hunchback: The Adventure (1986, Ocean Software).

Thanks to modern technology, I can just change the font. (: Here's the ZX Spectrum version of the game using the Hunchback II (Commodore 64) font:

Hunchback: The Adventure has one of the worst fonts I've ever seen in a game, and it's a text adventure, where the entire game revolves around reading text! Just look at how much the “s” looks like a “g.”

I translated "Backstage" (1993) presented by "LIVECLUB", a mail-order subscription service for CDs and VHS tapes. The in-game goal is to win a radio contest, but the game also invites you to enter a real-life competition that closed in 1994. archive.org/details/back...
On a dark purple digitized wall background: "LIVECLUB" logo in red letters; "Presents"; the logo for "Backstage", a graffiti-like design with green lettering outlined in yellow; "Freeware - freely copyable".Screenshot of "Backstage": Pixel art. The inside of a house in cross section, with two rooms fully visible - the living room on the top floor and the kitchen on the bottom floor - and other rooms leading off from them, partially seen at the edges. The hero character is walking down a staircase that connects the two floors.Screenshot of "Backstage": Pixel art. The hero character is standing at the entrance to a building with large open double doors, facing into it. The sign above says "LIVECLUB". There are promotional displays of what look like books or magazines.Screenshot of "Backstage": Pixel art. A cross section of a subway train carriage with darkness surrounding it, except for a light passing by overhead. There are several passengers standing or sitting on the train. The hero character is sat opposite one of them. Speech bubble: "LIVECLUB! They have the latest amazing CDs at incredible prices. Why not become a member yourself?"

This obscure, officially licensed Highlander RPG needs to be found and preserved! ASCII published it in 1986 exclusively via mail order and only for a very limited time. Three episodes were released, each priced at 3,000 yen. The game was available for the PC-8801 and Sharp X1 computers.

The games "Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves" and "The Return of Heracles" were re-released by EA in 1986 as a set called "Age of Adventure." This is the preferred way to play these two games because the menu navigation was made less awkward, and you can adjust the game speed.

Here are covers to early computer RPGs that Stuart Smith made between 1980 and 1985. I’ve only played them recently for the first time, and I gotta say, they’re charming and still rather fun to play today, if you don't mind the outdated visuals.

This Japanese episodic Highlander RPG, released by ASCII in 1986 for the PC-8801 and Sharp X1 computers, is lost media. It was available by mail order for a limited time and appears to have been advertised only in LOGiN magazines (11/1986–01/1987). Will this game ever be found?

The SNES version is the clunkiest of them all. The hitboxes are offset like crazy. The unique opening is pretty cool, but Adol looks weird in two of the images. The ending isn't as good as the others, either.

I'm shocked how different (and good!) the graphics are in the MSX2 version. Shame about the awful framerate, although the gameplay is really responsive.

(Re-uploaded with improved video quality and an error fixed.) Here's the spiral staircase scene from Ys III: Wanderers from Ys across the different versions of the game. For some reason, this scene isn't included in the Famicom and PS2 releases. #Falcom #Ys

There's some nice looking character sprites in the PS2 Wanderers, but everything else about it isn't very good. It's a very cheap-feeling game in many ways (barely has any scrolling). Taito did a better job with their PS2 Ys IV and V remakes.

Gagnant is a #MSX game released by Humming Bird Soft in 1986. It’s quite good, with nice mechanics (enemies stay dead, destructible environments), but was released broken. The good ending couldn’t be reached, and the high-score feature didn’t work. @larsthe18th.bsky.social has now fixed it!
