On the 3rd day of fossils, my true love gave to me... 3 cyclocystoids! I wouldn't be surprised if you've never heard of a cyclocystoid. They are one of the rarest fossil echinoderms and related to starfish and sea urchins. They are small and fall apart quickly after death. 1/x #12DaysofFossils

Hi, I’m Emma, an illustrator, comic artist, and sculptor with a propensity for drawing dinosaurs, monsters, aliens, and spaceships, but especially dinosaurs. I'm working on a sci-fi story with all of the above. Except dinosaurs, oddly no dinosaurs.
An Illustration of a Stegosaurus bounding and frolicking with its rear legs in the air as it chases a monarch butterfly. The stegosaurs plates are colored and patterned like monarch butterfly wings. An illustration of a tentacular space alien that is wet, dripping, and shiny manipulating a generic Henson style monster puppet with blue fur. A family of Dilophosaurus are feasting on the corpse of a Sarahsaurus. The entrails have spilled out and the adult grasps the heart in its hands while a juvenile tears at the body. Below the image it read "Fix Your Hearts or Die" an homage to David Lynch.

While hunting for fossils, the unexpected is sometimes discovered. These finds can range from pottery shards to this fulgurite, or "fossil lightning," formed when lightning strikes the ground.

Footprint fossils are important because they reveal the size of the animals that made them, their movement, and animal behavior. The 44,000 pounds of footprints collected at this site in Wyoming tell the story of tyrannosaurs ambushing a herd of hadrosaurs as they approached the river to drink.

While the new specimens described in this study are impressive, the other important thing is the maximum size of this animal. The animal has frequently been reconstructed to be over 2 meters tall with a wingspan of over 5 meters, but this is no longer true!

Well-preserved Triceratops skulls have a sharp falloff on the rear frill from a vascular texture to "scooped out" cavities. It is likely these cavities were filled out by neck musculature. Many reconstructions overlook them, ending up with necks that are prorbably far too skinny.

For #FossilFriday & in honor of @alinemghilardi.bsky.social & colleagues' fantastic discovery of a new Cretaceous pterosaur in Brazil in a dinosaur regurgitalite ("fossil vomit"), here's a diagram I made for my book 'Dinosaurs Without Bones' (2014) showing the physics of a puking brachiosaur. 🧪🦕🤮🪨
Cartoon depicting the black silhouette of a brachiosaur (long-necked dinosaur) vomiting from 14 meters (45 feet) above, and two small theropod dinosaurs fleeing from its impact; the deadly result of the impact velocity is shown in the upper right as a partial theropod skeleton with a splatter pattern around it. The cartoon has the following text: Brachiosaurus projectile vomiting: forces generated and resulting traces
"Assuming 50 kg (110 lbs) of regurgitant, impact velocity from 14 m (45 ft) height, and hard-packed sand as impact site," and "Impact velocity = V = V 2gh = 16.6 m/s; kinetic energy before impact = 6,860 J
Average impact force = 68,600 N." An original figure by me (Anthony J. Martin) in my book 'Dinosaurs Without Bones' (2014, Pegasus Books).

Love this Rhamphorhynchus specimen held in the Natural History Museum Karlsruhe. It's like seeing a pterosaur in flight, stuck in time.
In this specimen, preserved in the fine silt of the Jurassic Solnhofen Lagoon, not only was the complete, sessile skeleton preserved, but also the wing and tail membranes, as well as previously unknown internal structures. The complete preservation of the trailing edge of the wing membrane is exceptional. It was discovered on this fossil that the wing finger is supported on its back by a wedge of connective tissue, which ensures a perfect airfoil profile but renders the wing finger immobile. Furthermore, under filtered UV light, the finest structures can be discerned within the wing membrane: connective tissue that stabilizes the membrane, blood vessels, and remnants of the wing membrane muscles.

The reality of being a freelancer is that you end up working a lot of evenings and nights, something #mammals have been doing since the Mesozoic. Here's new #paleoart of two #Jurassic gliding Mammaliaformes, Arboroharamiya, starting their day as the sun sets 160 million years ago. #sciart #fossil
An evening chase erupts above the forests of Late Jurassic China between two gliding mammal-like animals. The sun sets between them, highlighting the leaves of the ginkgo tree they have leapt from. The mammals are darkly coloured, reflecting data from palaeocolour studies suggesting dark brown hues across most or all of their bodies.
