Fun interview with Paulina Borsook! It gets across an important element of her tech criticism: Humour. – cc @greglindsay.org – cc @nickkauf.bsky.social – cc @daniel-latorre.bsky.social – cc @grantennis.bsky.social – cc @movito.bsky.social

A tech prophet finally gets her second coming
In 2000, Paulina Borsook published a book foretelling the anti-government sentiments of the tech world. Now that it’s too late, people are ready to listen.

1/ A longtime Wired editor just wrote a mush-brained essay about how he totally missed the political rot of Silicon Valley (& still doesn't get it). But in the late 1990s, a Wired journalist warned of a toxic ideology bubbling up from tech. Paulina Borsook has largely been erased. Let's change that

A time of fervor, t’was
St. Lambert's Church in Münster, Germany, with iron cages in the tower. Summary by Claude:

“They were used to display the corpses of three Anabaptist leaders - Jan van Leiden, Bernhard Knipperdolling, and Bernhard Krechting - after their execution in 1536. These leaders had established a radical Anabaptist commune in Münster, taking control of the city in 1534. The three iron cages still hang on the church tower today as a historical reminder of this period.

The cages were hung there after the siege and recapture of the city by Catholic forces led by the Prince-Bishop Franz von Waldeck. After the leaders were tortured and executed, their bodies were placed in these cages as a warning to others who might consider similar religious rebellions.

This event was part of a larger historical episode known as the Münster Rebellion, where radical Anabaptists attempted to establish what they believed would be a godly kingdom in preparation for the Second Coming of Christ. The period was marked by increasingly extreme religious and social policies, including the practice of polygamy and the communal ownership of property.”

No don’t want the ‘Pro’ version of the computer, I want the ‘Amateur’, which doesn’t hide commands in obscure places, doesn’t want to keep updating everything all the time, and is on good speaking terms with the printer.

Strange how Twitter usernames are stored deep in the brain, like songs you never think about, and can instantly recall. Glad to have had @chumulu.bsky.social pop into my head, including their profile photo. How many more such handles are there, lurking deep in memory.

The classic text on this topic seems to go unread by the folks who need it most, year after year. www.metamute.org/editorial/ar...
