De basis van de huidige elektronische muziek is gelegd in de jaren vijftig, door avontuurlijke types die experimenteerden met geluid. Onlangs kreeg ik een boekje met de toepasselijke titel Muziek Uit Het Stopcontact. Hierin foto’s van studio’s waarin dat gebeurde. Je ziet rijen bandrecorders omringd door kastjes vol wijzertjes en draaiknoppen. Door die oscillatoren en generatoren werd stroom geleid en dat creëerde geluid. Pioniers als Varèse en Stockhausen beïnvloedden met deze manier van werken muzikanten als Frank Zappa en Holger Czukay. Ook in Nederland werd eind jaren vijftig volop geëxperimenteerd, met name in het laboratorium van Philips, door mannen als Dick Raaijmaker (Kid Baltan) en Henk Badings. In samenwerking met geluidstechnicus Jos Smolders gaat het Amsterdamse Moving Furniture Records de komende jaren muziek uitbrengen van Nederlandse elektronische pioniers via de Dutch Oscillation Series. De eerste release is gewijd aan componist Ton de Leeuw (1926-1996). Al zijn werk is verzameld op een fraai vormgegeven album, waarop – naast stukken met echte instrumenten – een aantal intrigerende elektronische tracks staan. Zoals Elektronische Studie (1957), vol bliepjes en piepjes, en het 19 minuten lange The Birth Of Music II (1978), vol scherpe noisegeluiden afgewisseld met Franstalige spoken word. Meest bijzonder is het teruggevonden Chronos, waarvan tot voor kort geen opname bekend was: een rustgevend bed van dertien minuten met opborrelende elektronica. Zet hierna het baanbrekende album An Electric Storm (1969) van White Noise op en je beseft wat een pionier Ton de Leeuw was. OSCAR SMIT
