Now’s probably a good time to say that a couple years back I turned down a five-figure offer from HarperCollins because they refused to put in a clause prohibiting AI from touching any of my books at any point in the process. I was lucky to be able to walk away, and it was the right thing to do.

I went to Barnes & Noble earlier tonight whereupon when I was perusing the front tables, a corgi passed by with its human ambling towards the exit. I made the smallest of sounds which was picked up by its ears, and the corgi turned at me expectedly, waiting for pets until they exited.

She stayed with family while sorting it out, even though she has medical needs and treatment back in the UK. She got some kind of emergency permit to be allowed in but even then the border agent was like she didn’t need it and that the British Airways agent should’ve let her board.

Tyrannical British Airways was the airline which last year had denied an American-British dual citizen from boarding on the basis that she used her US passport to return to the UK, even though it was 2025 and Home Office didn’t enact the law when you’d have to use a British passport until 2026.

But I think the concern over what kinds of books children are reading have some basis if their education doesn’t include learning about how biases are replicated in books and media, which are explained in age appropriate learning materials. There’s a lot of pushback on having them in the curriculum.

Looking back on my childhood, I think I had developed discernment at a young age between books that used offensive stereotypes and books that are explicitly anti-racist or gender equality, but it came from reading extensively and having the education to explain these themes.

Although I would personally frown on texts where the setting is “updated” to current times, like having smartphones or TikTok mentioned within the text even though the book itself took place in the ‘80s.

Fallonthropy @movabletypo.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
I think there’s not much incentive for publishers retaining its original language for older readers unless the text is itself is something they’ll grow into, like original Robinson Crusoe. It’s not completely analogous with children’s books when that older audience isn’t expected to revisit it.
100
Fallonthropy @movabletypo.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
I think it depends in the audience and the intention of the edits. E.g. I have definitely read abridged and simplified versions of old texts like Robinson Crusoe when I was in primary school, and there are similar classics for children where the edges of filed down.
