shame paradoxically for many freaks I do know offers them a sort of safety, a collapse of the possibility-space of the terror. There's an undercurrent of despair and self-destruction that underlies so much kink right now because there is a lot to despair over and not anything more complex than that.

I feel like you could also extend this to most hand-makers' and artist's fields assuming the products are up to a certain standard of quality and you want to not price out the average person. Making things with your own two hands is just not economical. Every handcrafter does it for the love of it.

I am currently brainstorming budget models explicitly because keeping the dream of seeding the ATL scene with whip-players alive is important to me, but this is also my job now and I can no longer charge people $140 for a signal whip. That just does not make ends meet.

Making whips as compared to making other kink gear is exceptionally time-consuming work as making kink gear goes. Every basic flogger you've ever bought was a huge profit, every whip you've bought is only priced to make ends meet. None of us actually charge what our work is worth.

It's not like I can contribute nothing. I make things, those things can be sold for money, but unless you also do content creation or get lucky in some major way just making things is rarely enough to sustain yourself on its own, especially things that are handmade since that's been so devalued.

this leads to more extreme categories of desire: "classical" sadomasochism (which is still accepted under stringent conditions), emotional SM (some types are acceptable, other types aren't), and more foundational sadomasochism (people think you're a psychopath and they're right) with no outlet.
