Ted Carlisle was angling for Governor of Wisconsin running a campaign centered around ‘traditional American values.’ This was vague by design, to cast a wide net, to thread an impossible needle. He was a Trojan horse of a Democratic candidate; he’d taken great pains in his years as a senator to appear much more conservative than he actually was, than he actually planned on being once in office. He was a wolf in sheep’s clothing—or, maybe it was the other way around, considering the political landscape of 2034. Ted was a dirty Democratic Socialist masquerading as a barely-left-of-center establishment Democrat, as a the kind of politician whose votes were for sale. He was behind enemy lines.

“I wanna throw up,” was the first thing Jules told Ted when she finally got to speak to him, hours later. “They’re killing people, Ted. They’re shooting ‘em in the head like rabid dogs and burying them and they’re hiding it from the rest of us.”
There was no field hospital. Innocent people were being taken to Effigy Mound Quarry to be executed, their bodies buried in the sand. Their only crime was being sick.
Ted’s face drained of color as the words tumbled out of Jules mouth in a confused rush. She didn’t have any other details; Brinley and his men had moved onto other subjects after that, something about taxes and tithes, and she’d stopped paying attention because she couldn’t believe what she’d just heard. She had to wait two more hours for them to leave, and when they did, she hightailed it to the Carlisle’s quarters. There she sat at their dining table, alone and panicking, until Ted finally arrived home around sunset.

In any other time, the building would have been alive and bustling at this hour. But it wasn’t any other time, it was the year of the storms, which meant it was the year UW-Madison’s student enrollment was at a historic low. With the civil unrest, the clamp-down on international and out-of-state students, the general brain-drain caused by two decades of anti-intellectualism enshrined into federal law, and of course the meningitis-like endemic in the south and in the west, it was not surprising. Finding a job, avoiding illness, and not getting disappeared by the HDA was a little more pressing than getting a degree.

(How do I describe what I saw, with eyes not yet accustomed to his face? I don’t think there is a person alive I could be less impartial about than Roʻonui.
Maybe it doesn’t matter. Time is only linear because our limited bodies keep us anchored cruelly within it, but I believe it spirals over itself and interweaves, and maybe this is why, when I saw his face for the first time after I had nearly died, before I knew his name, before I knew how the course of my life—and his—had changed by our meeting, I had an overpowering awareness of time and space and my position within them. It was a feeling without proof, without sense. I understood that I would remember that moment for the rest of my life, but I didn’t yet know why.
This is not the only time I have had the sensation. I’ve come to regard it as part intuition, part prophecy. My feet are firmly on the ground but my head has always lived somewhere above, in the stars.)
As I did my best to ignore the feeling of cosmic inevitability, I began to sort all of the things I remembered: Falling, freezing. Wet, slick skin gleaming against a sky like a white sheet of paper. Strong hands helping me out of my soaked clothes. Being carried, far. And then a man murmuring to me ceaselessly as he slid my arm back to its socket, a litany of soothing nonsense spoken in a deep, calm voice, even his hands shook and his whole body was shuddering with cold.
Such kindness from a stranger, and a stranger that I had threatened, a stranger who had threatened me back.
(He named me Red, and then lover boy. I never earned pet names so fast in my life.)

The lacrosse boys burst out of the front of the building and congregated on the steps, a tumult of masculine energy. Hedy waved her brother over, and he extricated himself from the fray. He was nearly unrecognizable now that he was out of the make up and gown, instead sporting a denim trucker coat with a shearling collar, jeans and tan work boots. His hair was shoulder length, wavy-curly, all the colors of a raging bonfire. He took the concrete steps two at a time, hands shoved in his pockets, and bounded up to them with a huge grin on his face.
And he was every bit as handsome as Margaux had suspected. Oh, dear.

“Oh yeah? You a dancer or an actress or something?”
“No, I do pageants. I mean, I did pageants before. In high school.” She looked at him, eager to see his reaction. Right on cue, he turned, his eyebrows traveling up his forehead. She felt warmth uncurl in her stomach.
“Are you fucking with me?” he asked with a laugh.
“What, you don’t think I’m pretty enough?” she teased.
“No, no, you’re gorgeous, it’s just—it’s crazy you met me on the night I was dressed like, yanno,” he said, his words coming in quick blurts. He seemed to realize he’d just admitted he found her gorgeous, and he became flustered. She reveled in it.
“I know, I was kidding,” she told him, leaning against his shoulder for a moment. He was really watching her now, naked interest on his face. She knew that look. She had her hooks in him. Easy prey.

You grow tired of seeing ‘…and then they came for me’ pasted into forum comments and Facebook statuses. You roll your eyes each time a leopard eating a face is brought up. The constant refrain of BURN IT DOWN whittles away at your sanity—burn what down? The White House? The National Mall? The homes of politicians wherein their families reside?
(The Republican senator’s twenty-something son is a virulent racist and makes posts online about sending the queers to a deserted island and then bombing it, so let’s make sure the plastic fibers in his clothes melt and adhere to his skin when his room finally goes up in flames. His kid sister, age twelve, whose bedroom is next to his, is collateral damage.)
Listen, though, listen.
If you decide to strike that match, the fire could spread from sea to shining sea, so be sure that’s what you really want. Fire is fair to a fault.
It could burn down the little white cottages with their white picket fences under cloudy dogwood trees in full bloom. It might burn down the public schools, kindergarten classrooms that smell like fresh crayons and old floor wax and construction paper, all warmed by the sun. Then it could go on to burn down the park next to your best friend’s house down on Cherry Ave, the park where you you’d meet up after curfew and stargaze for hours on top of the jungle gym, where you imagined a future that wasn’t going up in a cloud of smoke, where you promised you’d be friends forever, a golden childhood whose weight-bearing structures were built by people whom you’d never met, people who wanted to make certain their children and their children’s children could grow up happy and safe, people who did not yet realize their work was going to be stolen by people far richer and more powerful and there was nothing they could do to stop them anymore.

Because the folks at the top thought God spoke to them and gave them permission to set fire to the world so that they, His Chosen People, could build it back up to their liking. That, or they were born with enough money that they, themselves, figured they were God.

An inventor dreamed up the trolley car and the tracks it glides upon, an artist designed the interior with its leather benches and brass hand rails, a woodworker built the seats and an artisan sewed and stuffed their cushions, engineer made sure the electric mechanisms were hooked up properly to the wires above and helped design the strange, hollow wheels that hug the steel inlaid in the pavement, the pavement was mixed and poured by sweating day laborers, the road was plotted and named by city planners. A thousand of our hands have touched the trolley and its tracks. And all of those brilliant, strong, industrious hands had their work stolen from them by the ruling class, the billionaires, the bosses. They took our finished work and then tied us to the tracks and shed a single crocodile tear as they gripped the handle of the switching lever. The needs of the profits outweighs the needs of the few, you understand? Don’t think about how we all had a hand in our own demise! Don’t ask who decided to stick us in this idiotic moral hypothetical in the first place! Think of the money!
But the rich, the powerful, the politicians, the global elite, whatever you want to call them—they are down here with us, no matter how much they money they spend. Their high-tech bunkers will not save them. Their private militias will not protect them. Their space shuttles will not make it to Mars. We are shoulder to shoulder, backs against the steel, ropes biting into our bodies, necks craned, staring down the twin lamps of the trolley car careening forward at breakneck speed. Their bodies will get torn apart the same as ours. All blood will pool as one, in the end, and soak into the Earth, back where it began.
There is nobody at the lever. We’re all going down together in this ingenious trap we constructed, a trap we built with our brilliant, strong, industrious hands.
