A Virginia Creeper Sphinx moth (Darapsa myron) hanging from an oak leaf. It has differing shades of olive green along its wings and abdomen.

A huge (five and a half inches long) Hickory Horned Devil caterpillar (Citherona regalis) hanging from a branch. It has large, orange horn shaped protrusions on its head and a bright green body with a yellow stripe along the side. This caterpillar turns into the Regal Moth.

A large Imperial Moth (Eacles imperialis) on the side of a tree. It has huge yellow wings that fade into a burnt orange color at the tips.

A Spanish Moth (Xanthopastis regnatrix) crawling along the forest floor. It has an orange head and a black body with alternating white stripes and dots along its length.

For #InsectThursday and #BugSky, my favorite finds over the past few weeks. A grail moth, the Regal Moth found in a garden center, a Silver Long-jawed Orb Weaver, and a newly discovered flightless grasshopper (Melanoplus ingrami) that is only found in our Middle TN limestone cedar glades.

I've been trying to read more this year, so I took a bunch of old action figures to trade at McKay's here in Nashville and picked up oodles of field guides and naturalist journals. I grabbed this one randomly and turns out, the author is in Nashville! 10000% Recommended, a love letter, indeed.

A caterpillar hanging onto a leaf. It's the larval stage of the Eight Spotted Forester Moth (Alypia octomaculata). This caterpillar has small stripes of black over a white body with orange colored segments and fine white hairs all over the body.

A tiny moth on a green leaf with dusky brown wings that have iridescent blue, feathery ends. Along the wings are iridescent blue stripes that criss-cross. This is a Tragic Goddess moth (Strobesia proserpinella).

It's a rusty orange color with flecks of white throughout. This moth belongs to a complex of Himmelman's and Busk's Plume moths (Complex Geina tenuidactylus).

A picture of mounding fan club moss (Diphasiastrum digitatum). This shiny, green plant is spindly with fan shaped fronds that form a circular shape, it forms low lying colonies in mountain forests. Growing up, we also called it "groundcedar" because it resembles the shape of cedar boughs.

A picture of a very large (almost six inches long), spiky, green caterpillar hanging from the branch of a tree. It's head has many long, sharp looking orange horns and small black spikes run along its back (for deterrents against predation, these caterpillars are harmless). This is colloquially called the Hickory Horned Devil and it turns into Citheronia regalis, the Regal Moth, which is the largest North American larvae and moth north of Mexico.

Marge and I took a trip to downtown Nashville today to check out the park that needs signage on Portland Ave. It's an absolutely gorgeous lot with so many native plants, trees, and shrubs. They even have an herb sharing garden!

My TN Naturalist class yesterday was all about tree identification! I was mesmerized by the teeny, tiny cup shaped calyx on this Witch Hazel (Hamamelis virginiana). Their signature wispy yellow petals emerge from these structures throughout the winter. #nativeplants
