It doesn't describe what the conservative party in America has become: A populist, statist, anti-constitutional cult of personality. But there are plenty of American conservatives who are not part of that party or that movement.

The ability to be a better person is within all of us, but I think it's central to conservatism that sin is inevitable and that laws and governments exist to limit the damage from that, rather than to make us better people with laws and government programs that will teach us and make us virtuous.

The most extreme conservative project - Nazism - solved this by just killing people rather than trying to mold them. They didn't try to grow better people - they just killed the ones they thought were inferior. In either case, conservatives would argue, never give the State that much power. /5x

And that's *good*, because once you believe government can mold people, you become willing to *give the government power to mold people.* Conservatives inherently distrust the state (or did, once) for this very reason, among others. /4

You will not eradicate sexism or racism or whatever-ism by wise government policy. You can lead people away from it, or toward it, but you are dealing with some hard-wired human stuff about tribe and selfishness. Government exists to limit the damage, not mold us. /3
