Just did some number crunching using latest (Oct 1) ECMWF seasonal data, and I must say that I've never seen such high predictive confidence in a very wet California winter. This is a truly extraordinary forecast amid a record-strength El Niño event. [Thread: please read to end.]
Model-relative sea surface temperature anomalies for November 2026–January 2027. The supplied grid is displayed without added smoothing or coastal filling. Beige marks land and gray marks missing ocean values. The main colour scale spans -2 to +10°F, with white at zero. Hot pink marks anomalies above +10°F. This map does not establish an operational ENSO category.

Yeah, I was kind of leaning that way but was wondering it the leading dot should be reserved for some specific reason

I was wondering if there’s a concise way to signal the kind of thing an argument should accept. For now I give an argument for a column name the “col_” prefix to distinguish it from the argument a value in that column (e.g., to filter by).

Morgan Gray @morgangray.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
Thank you Nicola! I seem to be confused about the difference between column names, argument names, and “named arguments”. I use tidyverse style for wrangling work to perform actions on columns.

Morgan Gray @morgangray.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
I’ve read this page so many times. It sounds like a “.” prefix is recommended when using “…”. So does that mean if there are no “…” then the “.” prefix should NOT be used? Or is there ever a case for using them outside of the dot dot dot context?
Dot prefix
What’s the pattern?

When using ... to create a data structure, or when passing ... to a user-supplied function, add a . prefix to all named arguments. This reduces (but does not eliminate) the chances of matching an argument at the wrong level. Additionally, you should always provide some mechanism that allows you to escape and use that name if needed.

#RStats question: Do you use a leading “.” in argument names? I’m trying to figure out if the best practice is: my_function <- function(.df, .x) or: my_function <- function(df, x)
