Analytics by trade and a past life fighting Memphis crime with data. Ranting half-baked passing thoughts to myself and getting it out of my system before I ruin Thanksgiving dinner. I don’t claim to be right, but only the cat can judge me.

We’re in court today to stop the Memphis Safe Task Force from retaliating against our clients for recording law enforcement’s actions. Agents have intimidated, harassed, and surveilled our clients, and weaponized a law requiring people to stay 25 feet away from law enforcement activity

9/11 was disorienting in Memphis. As the FedEx hub, you get used to the sound of planes flying over one after another starting at 4am. Waking up to complete silence was like those movies where society disappeared overnight

I took a memory and cognition course in 1999 that discussed lightbulb memories. Back then the example was jfk assassination. Curious if they use 9/11 for that now, because instead of one shot it was one plane, two planes, one tower, two towers, another plane, another plane, and a sense of wtf next?

Same for me in grad school, had it on all the time. The funny thing is I got a Nielsen survey to log all the shows I had on for a week, whether I paid attention or not. I may have personally kept the L&O marathon going.

Thought I’d check in on the population at 201. Still at a steady but very elevated level relative to previous years. Trendline shows the population quickly went up after April 2025 and has stayed there since. What changed? Apparently that’s the very month the sheriff decided he wanted a new jail…

Way too many people believe that “databases” are complete, accurate, and can cross reference. Like AI, they don’t understand it, buy the sales pitch, and think tech ppl are infallible geniuses. That misplaced trust in tech means they won’t question the results.

Hey this is how I got my start in criminology! The department needed someone part time for data entry for the terribly-named Children of Incarcerated Individuals initiative. Early childhood experiences prevent crime, who’da thunk? Everyone in criminology, that’s who.

My guess: H1B and offshoring. An industry will emerge in other countries that trains ppl to meet mid-level criteria. For once there really will be no qualified Americans to fill those roles because they can’t get any experience. AI can’t replace entry level yet, but bet that’s the vision.

🧵 There’s some interesting history that gives context to why arrest surges and jailing immigrants at the Shelby county jail is a Bad Thing. I documented the Jail Population Management Plan that got the county out from under a federal injunction for overcrowding waaaay back as an intern.

Here’s the jail report card - early 2025 bookings already high. - 201 consistently over 2500 capacity. - fed judge got big mad at county for overcrowding. Process to reduce headcount: get them out of jail asap Surge of arrests doesn’t mean they’re locked up or face charges 🙃

Put the numbers in perspective: 10k - arrests by federal, state, and *local* LE 4 - months task force active 50k - avg bookings at 201 12.5k - 4 month booking avg No breakdown of what local arrests they’re including. Assuming number is inflated, they made fewer arrests than MPD would on their own

the AI rollout has easily the worst messaging of any technology I’ve ever seen it’s not even so much the underlying tech - a lot of people like the chatbots - but the continued promises that it’s going to ruin your life and there’s nothing you can do about it well - you can fight data centers

Actually not surprised - students first learning any subject learn the main points in plain English. LLMs are great at summarizing. Experts less so. It’s easy to forget that “the basics” you know as an expert aren’t that basic. The mark of a great teacher is the ability to eli5 complex stuff.

There’s a lot of lazy “wHy WoNt ThE dEmOcRaTs Do SoMeThInG”, but we should all agree that platner is a problem only because the Dems allow him to run under their banner. No one would debate voting for a Nazi if they enforced a “no Nazis allowed” rule.

Dinner-table conversation: surrounded by like-minded friends, but you’re aware you’re in an echo chamber of surface-level knowledge. AI has the veneer of being an expert as it has access to all knowledge. Its confidence tells you that based on what it knows, your opinion is right.

Checked Memphis and Chatt out of curiosity, but their 2026 Q1 data is incomplete ☹️ I’m keeping an eye on robbery/individual. I expect it to go down thanks to the ICE/fed surge. Not because it was effective. The drop will be a **decrease in Hispanic victims reporting robberies**

We need rain. Lake is 2ft below normal for Memorial Day weekend and hasn’t been increasing over the past 4 weeks. Discharge has been 1/3 of normal rate - good for kayaking upstream, bad for milfoil when launching ☹️
Chickamauga dam measurements on the Tennessee River. It’s currently 679 ft above sea level. Memorial Day weekend - the start of “lake season” - usually has a reservoir elevation of 681 ft above sea level.

Average discharge is 7k cfps. It’s usually 15-25k going into lake season to steady the lake at 681 ft. This is a barely noticeable current down river from Chattanooga and only seen at the height of summer, when it’s dry.

Tailwater elevation is low normal at 633 ft above sea level.

Picture dinner-table conversation: the goal is to keep the dialogue going, so it’s no good pausing for 10 min to go look up sources. This taps into the inclination to let the conversation flow, not dive too deep, not challenge assertions. Move along like opinions are knowledge.

Every time someone mentions “ending the X tax in America,” just remember that in this dumb era, all it means is reducing the tax base that funds the necessary workings of the nation and finding more ways to extract wealth from highly-taxed middle class via “fees” to send it to untaxed gazillionaires

I view it as, “do you want to perform a task, or do you want to solve a problem?” So many kids racked up debt for a criminal justice degree to go into law enforcement. But if you want to catch criminals, go to the academy! If you want to reduce crime, you have to learn what creates crime.

My theory is fossil fuel companies are all in on clean energy R&D. They’re not sticking their heads in the sand. Hindering competition isn’t just about squeezing as much profit out of fossil fuels as long as possible. They want to enter the clean energy sector as the dominant producers.

When I asked someone what made America exceptional, their answer was our navy’s ability to ensure freedom of navigation. I guess that illusion has now been shattered. Until they rationalize this. PS, when I asked, but what about the American people? The answer was, huh, never thought about that 😖

Re: livestock, it’s adding insult to injury. Over the last few years, so many cows went to slaughter because raising calves wasn’t economically viable. There’s now a shortage of calves to replace them. What happens when what few calves we do have can’t be fattened up for slaughter?

I think we took something of a 'wrong turn' as a society when we made our intellectual ideal the young 'best and brightest' and put all of the value on *intelligence* as an inborn trait rather than on *learning* as an earned value. Learning is, frankly, far more important.

Conservatives crave a hierarchy - they can’t comprehend people organically coming together for a common cause. They can’t believe people would just show up without being told what to do. Same rhetoric as BLM. Antifa as an organized bogeyman plays right into what they need it to be.

I genuinely think the president and many of his advisers, scammers, hustlers, and keyboard gangsters, don’t understand this concept at all and you can see it in the pattern of their mistakes from Minneapolis to Tehran www.nytimes.com/2026/03/29/o...
Yet never has so much been seen, so precisely, by so many people who understand so little of what they are seeing. A system can tell you where a man is. It cannot tell you what his death will mean for a nation. Such systems are trained on behavior, not on meaning — they can track what an adversary does but not what he fears, honors, remembers or would die for.

Use the correct terminology. It’s not “her unborn child”, it’s “the fetus”. 1. stick to factual, medical terms when discussing medical procedures. 2. “Unborn child” was coined specifically to take away a mother’s personhood. I have mad respect for propublica, but this was a bad choice of words.
