I’m disappointed to see Gaba reposting this. It’s dreadfully ignorant as history, besides being a complete non-sequitur and, let’s face it, just gutter racism.

Wait, was this her phrase? It brilliantly evokes “if I forget thee Jerusalem”…

“Matter” is not дело?

I suppose you feel that’s not woke, because suggesting that one could falsely believe they’re not trans implies also that one could falsely believe they are? Indeed both seem somehow like a category error.

The Stalinist position was that whoever was against communism was objectively a fascist (except when Stalin himself was allied with the fascists), and this lingered with the far left.

He’s right that there’s a difference. The “let’s” brings in a sense of community which, to Trump’s psychopathic mind, diminishes it.

It’s a defensible position to stipulate that 50% should be pre-1900 “western tradition”, and within those parameters the choices are vaguely acceptable; not owning it, and throwing in a few arbitrary 20th century authors, makes the whole list look absurd.

I thought this was obvious and I compared the complaints about you to readers of fiction complaining that the author doesn’t outright say the villain is bad.

A question for information - in “Zionist synagogues”, how is “Zionist” defined?
010
moreacomment.bsky.social @moreacomment.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
This response to Chait on Rufo is like YA readers who are upset because the author would not explicitly say that the villain is bad. Chait all but says that Rufo is a racist; he says so in a somewhat subtle, Atlantic way.

The “Kansas (no poll in June)”, itself, tells a story.

Yes! And then there’s an apolitical, small-z zionism which is simply awareness and respect for the continuous literary tradition since the formation of the Hebrew Bible, which really has memory of Zion as its core.

I’m genuinely confused. Isn’t your point the same as Chait’s?

If ever there’s a resolution of the war and peace issue, then the civil rights fight could begin (which is one reason why Israeli-Palestinians are overwhelmingly in favor of a peaceful resolution of Israel/Palestine).
000
moreacomment.bsky.social @moreacomment.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
There is a tendency, even among the well meaning left, to think of Israel/Palestine as a civil rights issue, because that’s how ethnicity gets parsed in the west; but it’s really at root not a civil rights issue but a war and peace issue.
130
moreacomment.bsky.social @moreacomment.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
It is indeed very hard to map into any analogues because there is no obvious parallel to a modern state stuck in continuous ethnic warfare while being ethnically mixed.

I’m familiar with some of the hiring processes here, and it’s more the case of universities entrepreneurially identifying potential donor interests, to recruit in line with their typical goals.

What’s fantastic is that you look into this account, and it’s evidently antisemitic.

Am I right in my impression that this used to be a bigger deal politically? It’s part of the big pivot from data to vibes.

I seem to have overestimated the percentage of people on here who care for probabilistic arguments.
001
moreacomment.bsky.social @moreacomment.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
“Anti-Zionism is not anti-semitism” is good logic but bad probability theory.
0153
moreacomment.bsky.social @moreacomment.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
It’s a simple Bayesian point. Since about 10-20% of the population is antisemitic, if someone without roots in the Middle East becomes obsessed with Israel/Palestine, then quite likely that’s because they’re antisemites.

MN polls are consistent with the popularist observation that while immigration is a net negative for the GOP, it’s still their stronger topic and they benefit from it being salient.

Depends what your goals are. To maximize the chance for thriving in peace, you want the Oslo process. Right now most Israelis are focused on a different goal: minimize the chance of a military defeat leading to actual annihilation. For this, you do want a fragmented, weak MENA.

Every time you’re about to click on a not-obviously-just-cute-animals video in social media, you’re probably about to inflict serious psychic damage on yourself. Skip it. It’s perfectly possible to be well informed by reading textual information only.

The IHRA definition was formulated by sensitive, knowledgeable scholars, it was not hack job or propaganda of any kind, and it’s still a very helpful entry point.
110
moreacomment.bsky.social @moreacomment.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
I think it’s a case of being overtaken by events. Prior to Gaza (when the IHRA definition was formulated) this kind of comparison was indeed deranged and a very strong marker of antisemitism.

If you want to make this argument, why do you so obviously use, yourself, the language and tools of propaganda and not of journalism? I would have treated this with more respect if the language was dispassionate and if there was a link to a careful investigation.

Sharon literally relocated the settlers from the Gaza Strip - and was about to do the same in much of the West Bank before he got a stroke, in one of a series of meaningless disasters to afflict every turn of this history.

So she gave this truthful account detailing both her at-times consenting role in the events as well as her level of intoxication. And this account really made a charge for rape in NY not a slam dunk? (But this is guesswork, and I am still surprised by what the NYTimes says about the law).
000
moreacomment.bsky.social @moreacomment.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
I wonder if what could have happened was, she filed the complaint taking it for granted that, being drugged, it obviously was a rape, not realizing the legal bar in NY was higher (which I’ve only learned today and which is shocking).

moreacomment.bsky.social @moreacomment.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
It’s base probabilities. Years ago, I used to believe that genuine racists were at the few % range, so I, too, would assume someone who presents like Rufo was probably not a racist. I now revised my estimate up to at least 10-20%, so when I see a Rufo I think, probably a racist.

I’ll rephrase: I find it likely that, once the documents become public, it would be evident that the warnings provided were such that, viewed through conception-colored glasses, many leaders, and not just Bibi, would have dismissed them.
010
moreacomment.bsky.social @moreacomment.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
Yes, and Golda was at least replacement level prime minister. Bibi of course bears the responsibility and he should have resigned years ago, but the strategic surprise is not something that couldn’t have happened without him.
100
moreacomment.bsky.social @moreacomment.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
I think this is too Bibi-centric. There was a conception that Hamas is weak, the fence is perfect, if anything happens it’s in the West Bank. It’s telling that the segen Simantov this time around were the *conscript* visint girls. No one in the command chain saw this coming.
110
moreacomment.bsky.social @moreacomment.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
This, I think, is completely wrong. If there were skills that could reliably prevent strategic surprise, military history would have looked very different.

I use AI in Hebrew only rarely (when my interest is specifically in Hebrew culture) so I can’t say I picked up tics but what’s hilarious is that Hebrew AI is much more eager to contradict you. You see, it was trained on Hebrew speakers!

I hate to go for *that* analogy but somehow I think of how the Nazis, with the war clearly lost, still focused so much on killing Jews. That’s what it was all about for them. And for the current GOP, it’s all about kicking people from healthcare.

I suspect there is some exaggeration in her story for narrative effect but one thing that comes out clearly is that one of the first things to fail, in a failing school, is feedback. There literally wasn’t work to check.

moreacomment.bsky.social @moreacomment.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
When Israelis deflect by saying that the deaths in Gaza were the fault of Hamas because none of this would have happened absent October 7th, that’s technically a truth, which is structurally similar to what you imply here, and similarly misleading. You’re responsible for what *you* do.

The majority of scholarship is on the mainstream subjects, I agree, but my impression (not based on real empirical research) is that this is indeed mostly pursued by those who seek safe, incremental hirable research - and who can blame them?
100
moreacomment.bsky.social @moreacomment.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
I agree but also, philosophically, I think scholars are a bit defeatist in the widespread belief that the only way to say something new is to talk about something new. I would like to see more young scholars trying to say something fundamentally original about, say, Shakespeare!

My kids were entirely non-athletic so I have no direct experience in that specifically, but isn’t the investment in sports for your kids more about the tremendous effort to gain that one extra bit of advantage for college admissions? This quest is all-consuming for many, many families.

It’s an interesting question, how much of Ossoff’s strength comes from committed Dem supporters being emotionally invested in him ever since 2017. (I know I’m one).

I wonder how the Germans do “implied national vote” in the manner of British local elections, but it seems to me those state results are merely aligning with the federal result from last year and that overall AfD might be plateauing, if indeed at catastrophically high level.

Of course you’re right on the substance. Plenty of us just point out the micro-tribalism. Undoubtedly many of those who defend Mamdani on this today would have excoriated a potential Mayor Cuomo for doing the same, and vice versa. It’s just a normal human failing.
