🌬 Today marks the @unep.org's #CleanAirDay. Citizens have power too, and the winds of change are already blowing. This power needs to be backed by actions and data. That's why more4nature supports 5 cases exploring how civil society works with authorities to improve air quality compliance

We must support, strengthen, and fully leverage community data and actions to secure our future. And our work in more4nature is helping to achieve just that, in 40 cases in Europe and globally. Happy International Day for Biological Diversity!

One thing is clear: in a world facing alarming biodiversity loss, collaboration between citizens and institutions in environmental compliance assurance is no longer optional; it is essential.

However, it's not all easy. The article notes that while citizen participation generates credible data, it still faces barriers for widespread uptake: institutional skepticism, data format incompatibility, failure to respect intellectual property, and insufficient organizational support structures.

The #KMGBF includes 26 'headline' indicators that are mandatory and provide a high-level overview of our planet's health. They are supported with 64 component & 265 complementary indicators. The study reveals that headline indicators offer more opportunities for #citizen monitoring than the rest!

Where can citizens move the needle the most? The research highlights that community monitoring is particularly powerful for tracking targets 5, 6, 9, 12, 22 and 23.

Furthermore, 110 indicators (30%) could be directly tracked through community-based monitoring programmes, and 84 indicators (23%) could be monitored via autonomous local #monitoring, not requiring the involvement of professional scientists.

Today, residents help to cover areas that are not monitored by the reference stations & contribute to the spatial and temporal resolution of air pollution models, assisting in particular to discern whether air pollution is higher in the area of Bærum than in Oslo during winter due to wood burning.

The reason is that “20 items per 100 metres” is the EU Beach Litter Threshold Value, established as part of the implementation of the EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive. A beach with fewer than 20 items per 100 metres of coastline is considered to have ‘Good Environmental Status’.
