This makes me think that whatever comes next, almost has to be a ground-up movement anchored on principle. I believe there are a lot of programmers watching silently in horror, but that may change once there is a banner to organize behind.

The reason why programming has been a successful conquest, more than any quality achieved, has been loud endorsements of LLMs from programming practitioners and figureheads. Aside from a handful of worried criticisms, there has been an utter solidarity vacuum compared to other creative fields.

The programming space has been marinating in extreme free-market libertarianism for decades, it's no surprise a majority would claim the ends justify the means as they openly welcome the new era of plagiarism and deskilling.

It's basically the same thing a JIT core of an emulator does when translating CPU instructions, only ahead of time. The code isn't readable or more native. It's still an emulator with the same overheads, except now all bugs and horrible performance problems are baked in. Great job everyone.

The two I found when searching for "Mother 3 recompilation" don't even bother in keeping a working translation of the code. Instead they shunt the ROM through "gbarecomp"; a runtime made up of GBA emulation code largely stolen via Claude, that the guy is also trying to sell for commercial use!

Thanks. I think the redesign will look dated AF once Apple gets tired of it in a few years but at least it's fairly easy to patch over.

You can turn it off with about:config -> browser.nova.enabled = false; no idea how long that'll be an option for, but barring architectural breaks those settings -usually- stick around for a while?

Yesterday was Wing Commander's release anniversary; I also released Wing Commander A.T. 1.0! There's been many improvements, but the biggest thing is that I brought everything over to Wing Commander II! It's been a heck of a journey (and a lot of work) to get to this point... alltinker.itch.io/wcat

Anyone who says things like "coding is just plumbing, it's fine because there's no creativity component" or "there's no possible way this would ever exist without Claude" is either chronically misinformed or just really likes AI.

Thank you for your efforts. I have ported games by hand (and will continue to). People seem to understand the differences in quality and fidelity of intent of a human localization vs. shoving pages of text through Google Translate; I can tell you categorically that porting code is exactly the same.

Pretty much! Part of what sickens me at how quickly large software projects opened the floodgates for slop, is that it makes it easier for idiots to use whataboutism about how "AI is unavoidable now". Like dunking on people who don't like asbestos for living in an old house like a hypocrite.

I just finished a patch for Tlon: A Misty Story: sonneveld.dev/tlon/ It's a 1999 point and click adventure game that's notorious for being incompletable due to a bug. There are save game hacks but this is a proper fix with correct exits and everything. Try it out and let me know how you go!

A troubling number of people at ScummVM think the future of ports is a Ghidra to Claude slop pipeline. To them: do you not see that the research is what gives it meaning? Do you think that maintaining the historical record deserves the same level of care as a Gemini summary telling you to eat rocks?

Real depressing. Also upfront about laundering the SCICompanion source code into Python and violating GPLv2 to get the hard part of the work that requires precision done.

I was shocked by how svelte Ubuntu 12.04 is! The desktop only used 200mb, which seems mad compared to today's Linux. Wonder how much of that is down to ARM7 32-bit being more memory efficient than x86-64, or the old desktop having less background stuff...

I dislike the framing of "I find this essentially impossible to do, therefore it's fine to use AI for these projects, in fact it might be the only way". Anyone is capable of doing this with persistence on a long enough timeframe. You don't get to hit the treat button and skip to the plaudits.

To use your analogy, mountain climbers do not arrive on this earth fully-formed and ready to take on Everest. They are passionate enough to persist and train on smaller climbs until they have the strength and experience. Reverse engineering is the same, every small project adds up.

110
moralrecordings @moralrecordings.bsky.social · 11/06/2026
You are mistaken. Humans have always been able to disassemble anything, and will continue to do so long after Claude fun dollars become too expensive to shovel into Ghidra. I won't contest that this makes it easier, but I don't buy the excuse that the tasks are impossible without it
