I'm a day late but yesterday was the 20th anniversary of Supernatural so here's the reference to it I snuck into my book.
Photo of a book page. Text reads: "We won't get the goats till we're settled in, but I'm getting a bonded pair of cats! I named them Sam and Dean." When I look blankly at her, Chapel launches into a long description of some show about two brothers who hunt monsters. I shake my head. I've had enough monster-hunting for now.

As a Millennial back in school, I can say with certainty that the part of my brain that cannot remember probability equation formulas is the part that still remembers every word to the Hymn of the Royal Canadian Kilted Yaksmen from Ren & Stimpy.

A lot of times I drive for ten miles with the emergency brake on. That doesn't say a lot for me, but it really doesn't say a lot for the "emergency brake". It's really not an emergency brake, it's an emergency "make the car smell funny lever".

I've said this before but I'll say it again If your reading recommendations (especially if you are an industry professional of some kind) include no works by Black authors Then I urge you to *seek out and read* more work by Black authors

And what metric is there for this anyway? I've seen people's careers take so many different trajectories. Like, "making it" doesn't necessarily look like one specific model of continuing to have success writing the same type of thing you started out writing forever.

Almost forgot to wish a happy birthday to my book baby! They grow up so fast...
A man with olive skin and dark curly hair and beard wearing a brown and cream trucker style cap and tortoiseshell glasses and a brown western shirt with brown and cream plaid shoulder patches sits in a room with white walls and curtains printed with woodland animals holding a book titled The Lumbering Giants of Windy Pines. The cover shows a Black girl with braids and glasses wearing purple overalls and a white androgynous girl with short dark hair using a pink wheelchair with a small dragon on her shoulder traveling through a dark wood.

Probably Alison Bechdel, in a now-defunct LGBTQ+ bookstore in Atlanta called Outwrite when she was on the Fun Home tour. There were promotional postcards and she drew a picture of me on the back of one.

And the tokenism, which isn't really anyone stealing your slot so much as there not being a fair amount to go around. You know, when a writer is told "This is good, but we already have a [x] book."

I will add here that *some* writers (i.e., marginalized ones) have a legitimate claim to not getting published or not getting good deals or industry backing for reasons outside of craft. But other writers' success is rarely to blame for our lack thereof.

Yep. Margaret Atwood was even honest about that; she's been asked how she thought of her ideas and said these are things that actually happened or are happening elsewhere in the world, iirc

I've been cagey about this since I look young and in this youth-obsessed industry hoped I could pass for one of the cool-kid rising stars instead of someone who'd been at it for decades before I broke through. But isn't that kind of the point of this? So... 42.

The lady smiled a wicked grin. “Back there? That’s where the real magic is.” She tossed her frenzied hair back and pointed her chin at the curtain. “Grimoires, rare artifacts, things like that that can do some serious stuff. Pierce the veil, wake the dead. Even love spells.

away. That would be nice, if nothing else. “What’s back there?” Joyce pointed to a black bead curtain hanging heavy over the back of the shop. Obviously, there was another portion to the store, and that curtain seemed to forbid mere mortals like us from going back there.

I reached down and touched it. I couldn’t deny that I felt a kind of energy coming off it, though maybe that was just the weird vibes of the room. It nestled right above the crack between my annoyingly too-big boobs and I hoped it wouldn’t draw attention to them. Maybe it would draw people’s eyes

Alt:Joyce and I both snickered, falling into each other. We couldn’t help it; balance was exactly the problem my scrambled-egg brain was giving me these days. Who knew all I needed was a floating crystal? The wild-haired lady hung the crystal around my neck. “Here. No charge. It was calling to you.”

Agreed! Variance in length in that category would be good in general. Some teens are reluctant readers and might be intimidated by the 400-page books that are so common in YA, as great as so many of them are!

I don’t like how ppl within our own country get pissy about the word y’all. It’s you + all. It follows all the rules of a proper contraction. But let’s get to the base of it. It’s rooted in the south so you think it’s wrong bc you think southerners are stupid.

When we searched Trump's executive orders & agencies for a clear definition of "DEI," there wasn't one. But after we looked at what's being targeted by MAGA resegregationists, the definition was clear: DEI is their term for "something that doesn't help white people.."

Because some owners and corporations are greedy and would pay nothing if they could. Wage laws exist to ensure people are fairly compensated for labor. Single digits is no longer fair and hasn't been for a very long time.

They did studies showing that, spread out, *if you did not raise prices to compensate CEOs and shareholders more than they're making now, which is plenty for anyone* raising workers' salaries to the livable rate was an average per-item increase of less than $1.

No surprise, some of these are also the last states where you might find relatively cheap rent... in small, remote towns, where there are not even minimum-wage jobs to be found, usually. And if you're a marginalized person, those towns may have hostile attitudes toward you.

8 states still have the federal minimum wage (unchanged since 2009) of $7.25. Two, Georgia (damn, my home state 😢) and Wyoming actually have LOWER minimums of $5.15/hr. The 8 are Kansas, Kentucky, Iowa, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, Utah, and Wisconsin.

I'm actually quite willing to pay a few cents extra for a burger* so the person making it doesn't have to choose between food and shelter. *the actual cost of a living wage, not the opportunistic cost when CEOs want to jack up prices and blame workers while they reap the profit

What is that crack at the end supposed to be? I was actually trying to have a reasonable discussion here but if you're resorting to insults I'm done. My points stand. All humans deserve basic living standards (not grinding misery). Minimum wage is too low. Workers are human and worth more, raise it.
